The morning started with another match against the Nicaraguan national team. It was a quick turn around from last night, but we played harder and held our own against our opponent. We put our heart into the game, however we struggled to execute points when it came down to it. The second set was a win for Gannon, but we could not pull through in the following sets. We fought hard in set three and improved our communication. Unfortunately, it was not enough to pull through against the experienced national team on their home court. The resulting scores were: 14-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 16-25. This was an experience in my volleyball career that I will never forget. It was an unfortunate way to end our volleyball matches in San Juan, but the day was far from over.
After a quick hour rally and a nap, we were back at it and on our way to Remanso Beach just 20 minutes away from the hotel. It was a dream come true, we were going to learn how to surf in a foreign country. The beach comprised of a snack bar, canopies and a WHOLE lot of surfers. About 30 surfers were wading in the water on their boards when we first arrived and our excitement escalated.
Following a delicious lunch packed by Kenny, owner of Wrap and Roll in San Juan del Sur, and a brief introduction, the first wave of us were out in the water and ready to catch a wave. It is not an easy sport to take up, but I was standing on my board after my second ride and I was so elated. The exhilaration of feeling the wave move under your board is indescribable. I fell in love after my first ride and a few other players felt the same way. This was a once in a lifetime experience that I will never be able to share my gratitude for.
Our time in San Juan del Sur was inspiring. The people here are happy with seemingly little or no resources that would cripple us back in the States. I am thankful for all that I have and I am able to give. I cannot wait to make our trip to Granada in the morning and see what it has in store for us!
