On November 5, 1993, Gannon University retired its first women’s volleyball number, the number 7 worn by Kathy Wotus. Wotus played from 1989 to 1992 and generally is regarded as the finest player to don the Maroon and Gold. She became Gannon’s first American Volleyball Coaches Association All-American in 1991, earning second-team recognition. She was then accorded AVCA All-America first-team honors as a senior. In addition, Wotus earned GTE-CoSIDA Academic All-America third-team accolades as a psychology major during her senior year.
Wotus ranks highly in several statistical categories at Gannon. She is fourth in career digs (1,293) after departing as the record holder, is second in career kills (1,970) and seventh in career kill percentage (.299). As for season standards, her 614 kills in 1991 rank second and she holds two of the top four spots in digs with 433 in 1991 and 431 in 1992. She owned the school’s single-season record for digs until 2003. Wotus set a NCAA national record in 1991 with 47 kills during an NCAA playoff win at New Haven.
