JOHNSTOWN, PA - Gannon split with the Mountain Cats on Friday in a road doubleheader, improving to 11-7 in the PSAC West. This is the first set of games between the two teams this weekend, as GU will host UPJ on Sunday as part of Senior Day.
Gannon pounded out 15 hits in game one and scored in five different innings, highlighted by a six-run fifth inning that broke the game open.
Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) led the way with four RBI's, a career high in a game for the Gannon backstop.
In the ladder game, Gannon built an early six-run lead, but UPJ scored seven unanswered runs over the final four innings to complete the comeback.
THE KNIGHT CAP - GAME ONE
- Second Inning Spark: Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) opened the scoring with a solo home run, and Gannon added two more runs on a sacrifice fly and an error to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
- Early Cushion Builds: Drew Stangelo (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) delivered a two-run single in the third inning to extend the advantage to 5-0 before UPJ answered with three runs to make it a two-run game.
- Game-breaking Fifth: Gannon broke things open with six runs in the fifth, highlighted by Hunter Troiano's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) two-run triple and an RBI double from Parker to push the lead to 11-3.
- Answering Every Push: After UPJ cut into the lead with two runs in the fifth, Gannon responded again with four runs in the seventh to create separation.
- Late Insurance: The Golden Knights capitalized on traffic in the seventh, using timely hitting and walks to extend the lead to 15-5.

- Third Inning Surge: Gannon broke the game open with four runs, highlighted by Matt Smith's (Duncansville, Pa./Hollidaysburg Area) three-run home run after an RBI double from Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township).
- Power in the Fourth: Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) added a two-run homer in the fourth inning to push the lead to 6-0 and give Gannon early control.
- Engel Delivers: Jake Engel held UPJ scoreless through three innings and finished with six strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
- Momentum Shifts: UPJ got on the board with a two-run homer in the fourth, then added single runs in the fifth and sixth to slowly chip away at the deficit.
- Late Comeback: Leading 6-4 entering the seventh, Gannon allowed three runs in the final frame, with UPJ using a two-run double to take its first lead of the game.
- Opportunities Late: Gannon was held scoreless over the final three innings.
