ERIE, PA - A year ago,
Easton Bazzoli walked off the court one win shy. His bid to make the Elite Eight in his first season as head coach came up just a few points short.
Tonight, he was the one cutting down the net.
In what may have been the gutsiest performance of the season to date, the sixth ranked Golden Knights, trailing by six at the break, stormed back in the second half to beat IUP for a fourth time this season, 81-74, and capture the Atlantic Regional championship. It's the fourth time they've beaten the Crimson Hawks this season and GU's second regional crown in the past three season.
This, without question, was the toughest of the four matchups.
IUP came to play early. The Crimson Hawks shot 55% from the field in the opening 20 minutes and stifled the Gannon attack, who jumped out to a 13-2 lead but were outscored 35-18 the rest of the half. Adjustments, were made, however, as Gannon's defense clamped down in the final 20 minutes. GU's field goal percentage went from 41% to 57% in the second half, and 50 points from the Golden Knights was enough to complete the comeback and earn the title.
Pcae Prosser, off a 30 point performance in the semis, led all scorers with 24 points in the win, earning Atlantic Region MVP honors.
Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia/Marist Catholic College North Shore) was also named to the all-tournament team and had 18 points and five boards.
Jaden Calloway (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Hartley) was superb off the bench again, pouring in 14 points in 27 minutes, while
Precious Idiaru (Speyer, Germany/LA Premier Prep) added 13.
With the win, Gannon advances to their second Elite Eight in the last three seasons. They'll travel to Pittsburgh, PA to face an opponent to be determined. Gannon is one of just four number one seeds to advance.
THE KNIGHT CAP
- Sweet Victory: Gannon took home their second Atlantic Regional crown in the last three seasons with the victory. It's the 31st win of the year for the Golden Knights.
- It Was Always Pace: Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) was dynamite all tournament long, earning Atlantic Region MVP honors. The sophomore poured in 24 points and averaged more than 26 points per game throughout the tournament. The night was actually a double dip victory for Prosser; his high school alma mater (Berlin Brothers Valley) advanced to the state championship game as well.
- Aussie Aussie: Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia/Marist Catholic College North Shore) added 18 points, going 5-7 from the field and 8-11 from the free throw line. He earned all-tournament team honors as well.
- Ain't That Precious: Precious Idiaru (Speyer, Germany/LA Premier Prep) chipped in 13 points and was a key part of the core on defense in the second half.
- Defense Makes A Stand: Trailing by seven at the break, the Golden Knights played an incredible last 20 minutes, outscoring the Crimson Hawks, 50-37 in the second half.
