Golden Knights Split Pair of Games on Day Two of W&J Invitational

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Gannon men's water polo team won its third straight match on Saturday morning, outscoring Penn State Behrend 24-19, before suffering a heartbreaking 20-19 setback to ninth-ranked Johns Hopkins in the afternoon. The Golden Knights are now 3-4 after completing competition in the W&J Invitational at Henry Memorial Natatorium.

THE KNIGHT CAP
  • Big Early Run Tames Lions: Penn State Behrend took a short-lived 1-0 lead but Gannon ran off the next seven goals and led 7-4 after one quarter.  
  • Golden Knights Explode in Second Stanza:  Gannon's attack was in high gear in the second quarter scoring 11 goals for an 18-10 lead at the half. Victor Volant (Fuveau, France/) and Rajmund Farsang (Eger, Hungary/) led the way with three goals apiece.
  • Volant Leads Scoring Parade:  Volant led the Golden Knights with six goals, adding three assists for nine points.
  • Eight Golden Knights Find the Back of the Net:  A total of eight Golden Knights scored goals. Farsang also contributed nine points on five goals and four assists while Petar Markovic (Belgrade, Serbia/) had four goals.     
  • Team Work Prevails: Gannon was credited with 21 assists on 24 goals. Nikiforis Liantziris had a team-high five assists, with Alexandros Kotskar (Voula, Greece/Athinaiki Agogh) and Farsang finding teammates for goals four time.
  • Golden Knights Fall Shy of Upsetting Blue Jays: Johns Hopkins'  Iason Mihalopoulos scored the winning goal with 11 seconds left. The Blue Jays entered the fourth quarter trailing 16-13 but outscored Gannon 7-3 over the final eight minutes.  
  • Liantziris Nearly the Hero: Nikiforos Liantziris (Athens, Greece/) nearly emerged as the hero vs. Johns Hopkins. His goal with 38 seconds left knotted the score at 19-19 as overtime appeared imminent. It was Liantziris' team-high fifth goals of the game. 
  • Victor Remains Hot: Volant continued his hot start with four goals and an assist. Markovic added three goals and five assists.

THE NEXT GAME
Gannon returns to action on Sunday, September 21 competing in the Bucknell Invitational. The Golden Knights face Air Force followed by Salem.
