Golden Knights Sweep Clarion to Close Regular Season

CLARION, PA Gannon closed out its regular season in dominant fashion on Sunday afternoon, sweeping Clarion in an away doubleheader by scores of 12-2 and 7-4. With the victories, the Golden Knights improve to 29-17 overall and will get set to take part in their 15th consecutive appearance PSAC Tournament, which begins Wednesday.

In game one, the Gannon offense erupted for 12 runs on 13 hits, with seven different players recording at least one hit. Senior Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) led the way with a 4-5 performance, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Sadie Carroll (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) added three hits of her own and drove in two, helping to pace a relentless Golden Knights lineup.

In the circle, Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) delivered another standout performance. The right-hander went the distance, striking out 11 Clarion batters while allowing just two runs on seven hits to earn her 15th win of the season (15-6).

Game two saw Gannon strike early and never look back. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) got things started with a solo home run in the first inning, then added a two-run triple in the third as the Golden Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the second frame. Mallozzi continued her big day with two more hits and another RBI, finishing the doubleheader 6-for-8 with four RBI.

Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) took over from there, shutting down the Clarion lineup over seven strong innings. She struck out 10 and scattered eight hits, improving her record to 9-8 while allowing just three earned runs.

The Golden Knights' consistent play throughout the season and strong finish secures their place in the upcoming PSAC Tournament, marking the program's 15th consecutive postseason appearance.

Gannon will open tournament play on Wednesday in Quakertown, PA.
