Golden Knights Sweep D'Youville Behind Girman, Westmiller

ERIE, Pa.Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) continued her hot hitting in the opener and Jessica Westmiller (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) tossed her first career shutout as Gannon swept a doubleheader with D'Youville on Wednesday at McConnell Family Stadium.

Girman was a perfect 4-for-4, including a three-run homer to lead the Golden Knights to a 7-4 win in the opener. In the nightcap Westmiller, a junior, limited the Saints to just two hits and Gannon exploded for six runs in the sixth inning for an 8-0 win in six innings.

The Golden Knights also went wild on the base paths, stealing six bases in the first game and six more in game two. That included five in the sixth inning.

The two victories boosted the Golden Knights to 26-17 as they play three straight days. On Thursday they head to Slippery Rock to complete the suspended second game from April 15. They wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader at Clarion on Friday.

Game 1 – Gannon 7, D'Youville 4
Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) got the scoring started for Gannon with a monstrous home run in the first inning then reached base with her fourth hit of the game to start a three-run rally in the fifth. D'Youville opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but the Golden Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Sadie Carroll (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) doubled to right center and Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) singled down the left field line to put runners on first and third. Girman followed with her fifth home run of the season, clearing the center field fence by plenty and scattering members of the baseball team practicing nearby.

Girman led off the third with a single, stole second and came around to score on Jenna Clontz' (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) groundout for a 4-2 lead. The Saints tied the game at 4-4 with a pair of runs in the fifth inning but Gannon answered with runs in the bottom of the frame. Girman again started the rally with a leadoff single and came around to score on Lindsay Breuer's (Mason, Ohio/Mason) sacrifice. Two more runs scored on a two-run single with two outs by pinch hitter Kloie Troutman's (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria) single.

Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) pitched the first five innings plus faced one batter in the sixth before giving way to Destiny Garcia (Stockton, Cal./Bear Creek) in the circle. Spano improved to 2-3 while Garcia, a freshman, earned her first career save. She allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one.
Girman finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring three times and driving in three runs. Gannon finished with nine hits and stole six bases, including two by Breuer.

Game 2 – Gannon 8, D'Youville 0 (6 innings)
Jessica Westmiller (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) threw the finest game of her career to lead the Golden Knights to the sweep. The junior recorded her first career shutout, limiting the Saints to just two hits and a walk while striking out five to improve to 3-0.

Gannon scored a run in the first inning on Lindsay Breuer's (Mason, Ohio/Mason) fielder's choice. Kennedy Maynard (San Diego, Cal./University City) was hit by a pitch stole and stole second. With the bases loaded Breuer hit a hard grounder in the hole. The D'Youville shortstop made a diving stop and was able to get the force at third base with Maynard scoring.

The Golden Knights made it 2-0 after four innings with Breuer again involved in the action. The second baseman hit a leadoff double to the base of the wall in left field and scored when Hannah Richardson (Shelby Township, Mich./Romeo) drilled a single between short and third.

After allowing just one hit over the first four innings Westmiller had to pitch out of jam in the fifth. A leadoff single and error on a sacrifice bunt put two runners on base. Both moved up on a sacrifice. Westmiller induced a short fly ball to center that Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) made a running catch to hold the runners. A comebacker to the circle ended the inning.

Gannon ended the game with a six-run bottom of the sixth. They bunched five hits together along with two walks as 11 batters went to the plate. They also stole five bases while pressuring the Saints to end the game early. Hannah Richardson (Shelby Township, Mich./Romeo) drove in a pair of runs with a single and Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name) added an RBI base hit. The game ended on Lindsay Breuer's (Mason, Ohio/Mason) single down the right field line.

Richardson was 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and Breuer finished 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Girman was 1-for-2 and walked twice.
