Golden Knights Split Games with Mercy, Bridgeport

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Gannon women's softball team split a pair of games on Saturday while playing in the Space Coast Games in Florida. They pounded out a 10-1 win in five innings over Mercy but the bats were silenced by Bridgeport in a 3-2 loss.
The Golden Knights have a pair of D Team games on Sunday against the USF Club Team and St. Thomas before wrapping up the spring trip with two games on Monday. The first is against Goldey-Beacom followed by the nightcap against Minnesota-Crookston.

Game 1 – Gannon 10, Mercy 1
Gannon took a 4-0 lead after one inning, taking advantage of three walks and a hit batter. Maddie Krause (North Royalton, Ohio/Holy Name) drove in a pair of runs with a double. The Golden Knights pushed across five more runs in the bottom of the second, again benefiting from a pair of walks and a couple wild pitches. The big hit was a three-run triple by Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette). She then scored on a Sadie Carroll (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) double. Mercy scored its lone run in the top of the fourth but Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) pitched out of a jam with a called third stroke with runners on second and third. Gannon's final run scored thanks to a pair of errors in the fourth inning. Armstrong walked the leadoff batter in the top of the fifth but retired the next three batters to end the game. Armstrong, a sophomore, improved to 5-0 while allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Game 2 – Bridgeport 3, Gannon 2
In a tight pitching duel that featured just seven hits total Bridgeport (9-5) pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning courtesy of the lone error in the contest. Gannon opened the scoring with a run in the top of the third when Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) walked and Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) tripled to center field. The Golden Knights were unable to get Clontz home from third. The Purple Knights took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame, both scoring on a single with two outs. Gannon knotted the game in the top of the fourth. Kloie Troutman (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria) led off the inning with a single. Pinch runner Corrine Wright (Latrobe, Pa./Greater Latrobe) stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice. Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tied the game at 2-2 with a sacrifice fly to center field. Clontz, Troutman and Whipkey had the lone hits for Gannon. Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) ended up the hard luck loser despite allowing just four hits in six innings. She walked three and gave up two earned runs. Bridgeport's Kaite Burawski struck out 14.
