Ayres Picks Up Second Save in Series as Golden Knights Split with California (Pa.)

WASHINGTON, Pa. – Gannon earned a split with California (Pa.) on Sunday thanks to a strong pitching performance from Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) and a three-run uprising in the fourth inning. The Golden Knights held on for a 3-2 win in the second game after dropping a 9-6 decision in the opening game at EQT Park in Washington, Pa.

The Golden Knights ended up splitting the four-game series with the Vulcans and are now 10-14 overall and 3-5 in the PSAC West. Cal is 17-5 and 52, respectively.

Engel threw the first 4.2 innings in the nightcap against the Vulcans to improve to 2-1. Ayres relieved with a runner on first after Cal had pulled to within a run at 3-2. The lefthander retired the next batter and pitched a one-two-three sixth. He recorded the first two outs of the seventh but a pair of singles put the tying run on second. Ayres induced cleanup hitter Santino Marra into a flyout to right to earn his second save. The other came on Friday.

Gannon returns to action on Wednesday, April 2 with a single nine-inning game vs. Walsh before playing a four-game PSAC West set against Slippery Rock next weekend.

Game 1 – California (Pa.) 9, Gannon 6
The Golden Knights took a 4-3 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning bit Cal tied the game with a run in the fifth and then scored five times on six hits in the sixth inning against a pair of Gannon relievers. Both teams opened the game with a pair of runs in the first inning. Frank Kula (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) opened the game with walks but the next two Golden Knights were retired. With runners on second and third and two outs Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) again haunted his former teammates with two-run single up the middle. Cal answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. The Vulcans took a 3-2 lead with a run in the bottom of the second but the Golden Knights battled back with single runs in the third and fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Bemis led off the third with a single and stole second. The sophomore third baseman eventually scored on an error. Bemis also played a role in the fourth inning score, hitting a sacrifice fly after Dom Costello (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted) walked and moved up on Frank Kula's (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) single. The Golden Knights made things interesting in the top of the seventh scoring twice to make it 9-6. The first four Golden Knights reached against Cal closer Jake Kramer. Bemis walked and Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) followed with a single. Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) plated a run with an RBI single and Smith added an RBI single. Kramer settled down and retired the next three Golden Knights as they left runners on second and third to end the game. Smith and Parker were both 2-for-4, with Smith driving in three runs. Costello was 2-for-3 and Soto had two RBIs. Freshman Zach Tkatch (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) went the first four innings allowing three runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Cal finished with 13 hits and Gannon nine.

Game 2 – Gannon 3, California (Pa.) 2
Cal took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the second inning on a home run by James Salvatori. Gannon scored all of its runs in the top of the fourth. Wes Parker (Venetia, Pa./Peters Township) and Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) opened the inning with walks. Connor Smith (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) singled up the middle to drive in Parker
and with two outs Hunter Troiano (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seneca Valley) doubled home Soto and Smith. Cal chased starter Jacob Engel (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) from the game with a double and RBI single with two outs in the fifth. Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) came in and recorded the third out on a fly out. The redshirt sophomore retired the Vulcans in order in the sixth and made it six straight outs when he retired the first two batters in the seventh. Back-to-back singles brought up cleanup hitter Santino Marra. Ayres finished his second save with a fly out to right field. Engel improved to 2-1 as the sophomore righthander went 4.2 innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out three. Ayres went the final 2.1 innings allowing two hits. Troiano was 2-for-2 with 2 RBIs. Gannon ended the day with six hits while the Vulcans had eight.
