The Gannon softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over California (Pa.) on Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium, highlighted by Head Coach
Michelle Wiley's 150th career victory and a dramatic walk-off finish in game two.
The doubleheader sweep pushed Gannon to 14–12 overall and 5–5 in PSAC West play, while the Vulcans fell to 5–23 (2–6 PSAC West), respectively.
The Golden Knights opened the day with a 7–3 win in game one, powered by an efficient offensive performance and a strong outing in the circle from
Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois). Gannon plated runs in four of the first five innings, including a three-run fourth that helped build a comfortable lead.
Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) led the charge with a two-run homer, while
Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) and
Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) each drove in runs. Lenda went the distance in the circle, allowing just two earned runs and striking out five to pick up her fourth win of the season.
Game two was a tighter contest, with California (Pa.) tying the game at 3–3 in the top of the sixth. But Gannon had the final word. With one out in the bottom of the seventh,
Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) singled and came around to score on a walk-off double to right center by
Sadie Carroll (North Canton, Ohio/North Canton Hoover), sealing the 4–3 win and the sweep.
The Golden Knights struck early in the second game, jumping out to a 3–0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Clontz and Mallozzi's second home run of the day. Cal U chipped away, eventually tying the game in the sixth, but
Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) kept the Vulcans in check, going the distance for her ninth win of the season.
Gannon is back in action on Wednesday, April 2, when they travel to Lake Erie. First-pitch of the non-conference doubleheader is slated for a 3:00 PM start in Painsville, Ohio.
