Hunter Reaches Career Milestone in Loss to No. 21 Slippery Rock

Smith leads Golden Knights with three goals

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's lacrosse team opened PSAC West action on Saturday facing a strong Slippery Rock team that came in ranked 21st in the IWLCA Division II rankings. The Rock would end up getting the best of the Golden Knights by a 20-9 score. Gannon is now 2-5 overall while Slippery Rock improved to 6-1.

Rayla Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) led Gannon with three goals while Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) had two goals and an assist and Avrey Kirisits (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) scored twice. Ten different Slippery Rock players found the back of the net.

Hunter, a junior midfielder, also reached a milestone during the first half, topping 100 career draw controls. She had six on the day and now sits at 102 draw controls.

In a match that started with snow flurries falling at McConnell Family Stadium, Gannon hung with the nationally-ranked Slippery Rock squad for the first half. Hunter scored the opening goal of the match at 13:47 on a free position shots as SRU led 3-2 after one period. Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) scored her 18th goal on a free position shot during the period.

The second quarter was back-and-forth with SRU scoring twice and Gannon countering with a pair of goals. The Rock answered with two more goals for a 7-4 lead but Smith scored back-to-back goals in less than 30 seconds as Gannon pulled to within 7-6 with 4:02 left in the half.

Slippery Rock scored our straight goals before Kirisits' goal with 29 seconds remaining made it 11-7 at the half.

Slippery Rock outscored Gannon 4-0 in the third quarter and continued its run with five more goals to start the fourth period. The nine straight goals extended Gannon's deficit to 20-7. The Golden Knights finally broke through with a free position goal by Hunter with 2:12 remaining and Smith scored her third goal of the match in the final minute.

The Rock ended with a 54-16 advantage in shots and 35-13 in shots on goal. Gannon had 20 turnovers and SRU 15.
Haleigh Manning (Milton, Ga./Cambridge) started in goal and would return in the final minutes, playing 52 minutes in all. The senior finished with 14 saves.

Gannon plays its second straight home match with Indiana (Pa.) visiting McConnell Family Stadium on Wednesday, March 26. The PSAC West match gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
