Despite a strong effort in the second half, the Gannon women's lacrosse team could not overcome an early deficit, losing to Shepherd 18-14 on Sunday at Ram Stadium.
After a slow start, Gannon found its rhythm in the second half, outscoring Shepherd 10-8.
Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) led the team with five goals, while
Charlie Hunter (Boston, N.Y./Hamburg) contributed four.
Rayla Smith (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) added three goals and one assist, and
Ella Todd (Maple Ridge, British Columbia/Maple Ridge Secondary) finished with two goals and two assists, all playing key roles in Gannon's offensive efforts.
Shepherd controlled the first half, jumping out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and extending it to 10-4 by halftime.
However, Gannon responded in the third quarter with a six-goal surge, featuring two goals each from Stevens and Smith, shifting the momentum in their favor.
The Golden Knights won the draw control battle (19-17) and created multiple scoring opportunities. However, turnovers and Shepherd's potent offense proved too difficult to overcome.
Freshman goalkeeper
Allison Lerch (Coraopolis, Pa./Moon) made her collegiate debut, recording nine saves in 50:23 of play, helping to keep Gannon within striking distance.
Gannon continued to fight in the fourth quarter, narrowing the gap to 16-13, but Shepherd responded with two late goals to secure the victory.
