The Gannon softball team opened PSAC West play with a doubleheader against Edinboro inside McConnell Family Stadium.
After dropping a tight 4-3 contest in Game one, the Golden Knights bounced back with a convincing 5-1 victory in the nightcap.
Game 1: Edinboro 4, Gannon 3
A three-run first inning put Gannon in an early hole, but the Golden Knights battled back.
Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) doubled and later scored on an RBI single from
Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) in the third. Gannon tied the game in the fifth with RBI singles from
Lindsay Breuer (Mason, Ohio/Mason) and
Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic). However, Edinboro reclaimed the lead in the seventh with an RBI double, and Gannon was unable to answer in the final frame.
Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) threw a complete game with nine strikeouts but took the loss.
Game 2: Gannon 5, Edinboro 1
The Golden Knights responded in Game two behind a dominant pitching performance from
Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), who struck out 10 while allowing just two hits in a complete-game win. Gannon jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the first, highlighted by an RBI single from Breuer and a double by
Bella Atherton (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong). The Knights added two more in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from
Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) and a groundout RBI from Mallozzi. Edinboro's only run came in the sixth, but Armstrong shut the door to secure the 5-1 win.
