Armstrong Tosses Gem as Golden Knights Earn Split on Final Day

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Gannon softball team ended its eight-game trip to the Space Coast Games on Monday with a split of a doubleheader. The Golden Knights dropped a 3-2 decision in eight innings to Goldey-Beacom in the first game before riding a strong pitching performance by Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) to a 3-0 shutout of Minnesota Crookston.

The Golden Knights ended up going 5-3 in Florida and return to the north with a 9-5 record. They play a doubleheader at Ohio Dominican on Saturday, March 15.

Earlier in the day Armstrong was named the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week. The sophomore then went out and improved to 6-0 with a three-hit shutout as Gannon ended its spring trip with a 3-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.

Game 1 – Goldey-Beacom 3, Gannon 2 (8 innings)
Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) and Goldey-Beacom's Caitlyn Burch engaged in a pitching dual with Burch ultimately improving to 8-1 when the Lightning pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth. Goldey-Beacom took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second but Gannon climbed ahead 2-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) opened the inning with a single and Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) followed with an RBI double. Mallozzi later scored on a fielder's choice by Lindsay Breuer (Mason, Ohio/Mason). The Lightning tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning and the game ended up going into extra innings. Gannon would load the bases but had a runner thrown at home. Goldey-Beacom sacrificed the ghost runner to third and an intentional walk and hit batter loaded the bases. Emma Friel followed with the game-winning single. Gannon finished with six hits and Goldey-Beacom seven. Lenda (2-3) was the hard luck loser allowing just one earned run, walking two and striking out seven.

Game 2 – Gannon 3, Minnesota Crookston 0
Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) allowed base hits to the second and third batters she faced as Minnesota Crookston had runners on first and second with no one out. The sophomore escaped that jam and proceeded to retire the next 18 batters in a row. Hannah Trzinski finally ended the string with an infield single, but Armstrong induced a popup and struck out the final batter, her eighth strikeout of the game, She ended with a three-hit shutout and did not allow a walk. Gannon took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) walked with one out and moved up to second on a wild pitch with two outs. The first baseman came around to score on Lindsay Breuer's (Mason, Ohio/Mason) single to center field. The Golden Knights would have runners in scoring position in the third and fourth innings but did not score. They finally broke through with two more runs in the fifth, once again with two outs. Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) walked and scored on Abbey Girman's (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) triple to left field. Breuer followed another RBI single to give Armstrong some cushion at 3-0.
