Smerick, Armstrong Sweep PSAC West Softball Athlete of the Week Honors

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Gannon softball team swept the PSAC West Softball Athlete of the Week awards for this past week. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the honors this afternoon with Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) named the PSAC West Athlete of the Week and Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) selected the PSAC West Pitcher of the Week.

Gannon spent the week in Melbourne, Florida at the Space Coast Games, and in fact are wrapping up their trip on Monday with two games. The Golden Knights are 3-3 so far on the southern trip and have an 8-4 record to date.

Smerick is a sophomore outfielder from Ford City, Pa. She had six hits in 17 at bats for a .353 batting average, scoring eight runs and driving in six. She had one double, a triple and stole 11 bases in 11 attempts.

Her top effort was a 2-for-3 outing with three runs scored and three RBIs, with a triple among her hits. She stole two bases against the Senators, along with three steals vs. Ursuline and two more against Mercy.

Armstrong is a sophomore from Lower Burrell, Pa. The righthander went 3-0 on the week with a miniscule 0.41 ERA, allowing just three runs total and one earned run in 17 innings. She struck 11 batters in a four-hitter against Ursuline. For the week she permitted just nine hits and four walks while striking out 25.
