No. 11/7 Golden Knights Drop to Third in PSAC West with 66-53 Loss to Edinboro

Despite loss Gannon clinches bertth in PSAC Tournament

ERIE, Pa. – Gannon saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening as Edinboro came into the Highmark Events Center and handed the Golden Knights a 66-53 loss. The good news for the Golden Knights is despite the loss they clinched a berth in the PSAC Tournament.

The setback dropped the Golden Knights, ranked seventh in the D2CSC Div. II Top 25 and 11th in the WBCA poll to 20-4. More importantly, the Golden Knights fell a game behind the Fighting Scots into third place in the PSAC West at 12-3. Edinboro improved to 13-3 in the conference and 18-4 overall.

Gannon suffered its first home loss since Nov. 10, 2024 vs. Glenville State. The Golden Knights had run off 28 straight wins at home since then.

In many respects the second meeting mirrored the first in which Edinboro had a big early run and held off the Golden Knights for a 62-45 win at McComb Fieldhouse.

Edinboro scored the first eight points of the game and led 14-5 after one quarter and 32-19 at the half. Gannon appeared on the verge of a comeback, closing to within 40-34 midway through the third quarter. Edinboro responded with a 13-2 run to close the quarter and led 53-36 with ten minutes to play. The closest Gannon could get was 11 points in the fourth quarter.

After shooting a season-low 26.6 percent in the first meeting the Golden Knights weren't much better on Wednesday at 13.4 percent (22-of-70). They also went to the line just once the entire game, with Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) making one-of-two with 6:37 left in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Edinboro scored the first eight points of the game as Gannon started the game missing its first six shots and turned the ball over six times. Trinitee Harris (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) finally hit a 3-pointer at 4:22 and the senior guard added a jumper in the paint to make it 10-5. Edinboro ran off the fine four points to lead 14-5 after one period as Gannon made just 2-of-17 shots.

Gannon's shooting improved in the second quarter and the Golden Knights twice pulled to within seven points, the last at 24-17. But Edinboro went on an 8-0 run and led 32-19 at the half.

Neither team scored for almost three minutes in the third quarter before Edinboro's Morgan Gentile hit a 3-pointer. Gannon answered with a 12-3 burst and the Golden Knights had suddenly pulled to within 38-31 with 4:43 to play. Claxon hit a three, Ratliff went to the line for Gannon's lone time all night, making one-of-two, and Jordan Popyk's (Novi, Mich./Novi) jumper made it a ten-point game at 35-25.
Edinboro hit a 3-pointer, but the next six points belonged to Gannon on Maddy Wheatley's (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra) rebound basket, Claxon's jumper and Ratliff's layup to make it 38-31 with 4:43 to play.

Edinboro called a timeout and when the teams Gannon eventually made it a six-point game at 40-34 on a Wheatley three. But the Fighting Scots ended the period on a 13-2 run to lead 53-36 after three periods. Gannon pulled no closer than 11 points in the final period.

BY THE NUMBERS
Gannon attempted 28 more shots than Edinboro, 70-42, but the Golden Knights shot just 31.4 percent (22-of-7) while the Fighting Scots were at an even 50.0 percent (21-of-42). They sizzled from beyond the arc making 10-of-14 while the Golden Knights were 8-of-29. And Edinboro went 14-of-20 at the line while Gannon was 1-of-2. Gannon was called for twice as many fouls as Edinboro, 22-11.

After Edinboro dominated the glass in the first meeting this time around both teams pulled down 36 missed shots. Gannon forced Edinboro into 22 turnovers while committing 14.

Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) led Gannon with 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers. Maddy Wheatley (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra) was the only other Golden Knight in double digits with 10 points, adding six rebounds. Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) added nine points, six rebounds and three assists.

Gannon hosts Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday, February 8 with tipoff set for 1:00 p.m. at the Highmark Events Center. It's another key Western Division clash with IUP at 10-3 in league play.
