Golden Knights Score 21 Runs, Pound Out 26 Hits in Sweep at Wheeling

WHEELING, W.Va. – The big bats were out once again for the Gannon softball team as the Golden Knights swept a windy doubleheader at Wheeling while scoring 21 runs and pounding out 26 hits. Gannon claimed the opener by a 9-3 margin, then moved indoors with the wind whipping the field and rallied for a 12-4 win in game two. Gannon is now 5-1 with a trip to Florida next on the horizon.

Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) continued to wield a hot bat in the opener. The lefty-swinging first baseman reached base on all plate appearances in the first game, going 3-for-3 and walking twice. Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong), meanwhile, drove in six runs while hitting a home run in each game. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) had five hits and four RBIs in the two games.

Gannon now heads down to Florida to compete in the Space Coast Games in Melbourne, Fla., playing eight games in all. They return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 5 facing Assumption and Davis & Elkins.

Game 1 – Gannon 9, Wheeling 3
The Golden Knights finished with 16 hits while ace Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) scattered seven hits. Six different players had multiple hits with Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) reaching base in all five plate appearances. She had a triple and two singles and walked twice. Gannon was able to coast after jumping out to a 7-1 lead after two innings. Mallozzi had an RBI triple while Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and Lindsay Breuer (Mason, Ohio/Mason) had also RBI hits in the first inning. The big blow in the second inning was a two-run homer by Girman. Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the fifth. Clontz and Girman had two hits and three RBIs apiece while Breuer joined Mallozzi with three hits in four at bats. Smerick and Bella Atherton (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) added two hits each. Lenda picked up her second win of the season while going the distance. She allowed seven hits and walked three while striking out six.

Game 2 – Gannon 12, Wheeling 4
While the game was moved to an indoor facility due to weather conditions the bats were still alive. The Golden Knights did find themselves trailing 2-0 heading into the fifth inning. They put up four runs in the top of the fifth but the Cardinals answered with two runs to tie the game at 4-4. The fifth saw Smerick and Clontz hit RBI doubles and freshman Sadie Carrol drove in a run with single.  Gannon took the lead for good with three runs in the sixth. Clontz had the big blow, a two-run homer. The Golden Knights then pushed across five more runs in the seventh with Smerick plating a pair with a double. They were able to take advantage of five Wheeling errors in the game. Smerick was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs while Clontz was 3-for-5 with 3 RBIs. Carrol was a third Golden Knight with three hits and had two of Gannon's seven steals. Katie Arnstrong went the distance in the circle. While allowing nine hits she did not walk a batter and struck out 12 to match her career high.
