Hot-Shooting Cal Sends Golden Knights to Third Straight Loss

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – Unfortunately for the Gannon men's basketball team February began as January. The Golden Knights saw their losing streak stretch to three games and four in the last five outings with a 106-84 loss at California (Pa.).

The loss drops Gannon, who came in ranked 23rd in the D2CSC Top 25, to 16-6. However, their lead in the PSAC West is still three games at 11-3. Cal improved to 12-10 and is now 7-7 in league play.

The game was an incredible turnaround to the first meeting when Gannon posted the largest margin of victory ever over the Vulcans at 108-71 on Jan. 4. The 59-point turnaround saw Gannon never lead as Cal came out on fire, shooting over 70 percent from the floor for an extended period in the first half.

Cal made five 3-pointers in the first five minutes.  The Vulcans' led was as many as 25 points in the first half at 44-19 before Gannon closed to 52-39 at the half. The 20-8 run was keyed by two three's by Prosser and two more by Shelton, the second at the buzzer.

The Golden Knights staged a rally early in the second half, pulling to within 11 points on three occasions. The last came at 58-47 when Prosser knocked down a 3-pointer.  But Cal answered with a 13-1 run to boost the lead back up over 20 points.

BY THE NUMBERS
A year ago Cal shot an incredible 70.6 percent in a 99-84 win on their homecourt. While not quite that hot this year, the Vulcans ended at 52.4 percent (33-of-63), making 11-of-26 3-pointers. Gannon shot almost 52 percent in the first half to finish at 44.6 percent for the game (29-of-65). The Golden Knights were 9-of-26 on 3-pointers, with Ernest Shelton (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) and Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) making eight of the nine.

The game turned into a foul fest in the second half. Gannon was whistled for 29 fouls while Cal committed 24. The Golden Knights were 17-of-28 at the line and Cal 29-of-38.

Gannon was able to force just eight turnovers, including two in the first half. The Golden Knights were guilty of twice that many. Cal scored 21 points off turnovers and GU just five. The two teams tied on the glass with 37 apiece.

Shelton continued his strong offensive play. The sophomore guard had his sixth game of 20-or-more points in the last eight games. He finished with 23 points, making 5-of-7 3-pointers and 7-of-12 shots overall. Shelton now has 74 3-pointers on the season, good for eighth in a season at Gannon.

Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) picked up steam as the game went on. The freshman guard was an efficient 5-of-7 shooting, including 3-of-5 on 3-pointers, for 16 points. He added five rebounds and four assists.

Tasman Goodrick (Sydney, Australia/St. Joseph's College) was a third Golden Knight in double digits with 14 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Mason Kemp (Shawnee, Kan./Mill Valley) came off the bench to add seven points.
