No. 15 Gannon Pulls Away in Battle of PSAC Preseason Favorites

Golden Knights win 101-76 at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The 15th-ranked Gannon men's basketball team led from start to finish in picking up a big road victory on Saturday in a battle of preseason PSAC division favorites. The Golden Knights wore down West Chester and pulled away for a 101-76 win at Hollinger Field House.

The game featured two NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago with Gannon the PSAC West preseason favorite and WCU the pick to win in the Eastern Division. The Golden Knights have now won five straight games while improving to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in PSAC action. West Chester had won seven games in a row. The Golden Rams dipped to 7-2 and 1-1 in league play.

Saturday contest was a showcase of two of the top three scoring teams in the PSAC. Gannon led the way at 97.9 ppg. and WCU was third at 90.0 ppg. The Golden Rams were allowing just 71.2 ppg., second in the conference, but Gannon pulled away with a 56-point effort in the second half. Gannon shot just under 57 percent over the final 20 minutes.

Gannon scored the first five points of the game and held an early double-digit lead before WCU closed to 18-17. However, an 18-3 run gave Gannon a 45-32 lead at the half.

Just when West Chester thought it had climbed back into the contest the Golden Knights put on one of their patented spurts, keyed by a host of turnovers. WCU pulled to within 54-48 with just over 13 minutes left. Over the next seven minutes Gannon outscored the Golden Rams 30-6 to blow the game open at 84-56.

THE KNIGHT CAP
  • Have We Told You About the Turnovers?: Turning defense into offense. That has been the key to Gannon's success since "The System" arrived three years ago. It was clearly evident again on Saturday. Gannon forced 28 turnovers that led to 33 points, while the Golden Knights gave up 14 points on their 18 miscues. That comes after forcing a school-record 48 turnovers vs. Kutztown on Tuesday and 38 against Saginaw Valley State in the game before that.
  • Yes You're Seeing Double: Two of head coach Easton Bazzoli's key additions this season were twin brothers Mackenzie and Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia/Marist Catholic College North Shore). West Chester saw more than enough of the duo from Sydney, Australia. Mackenzie Morgan (Sydney, Australia/Marist Catholic College North Shore) poured in a season-high 22 points, making 4-of-8 3-pointers. Despite battling foul trouble Lucas Morgan (Sydney, Australia/Marist Catholic College North Shore) added 11 points in just 18 minutes. They combined for 14 points in a key stretch of 20 points over a four-minute stretch in the second half. Mackenzie had eight, including a pair of threes, with Lucas adding six.
  • That's Five with 100: Carter Wamsley's (York, Pa./Eastern York) layup with 17 seconds remaining put the Golden Knights over the century mark for the fifth time this year and second game in a row. It's the highest point total allowed by West Chester this season.
  • Five Golden Knights Reach Double Digits: The Morgan's were joined by three other Golden Knights in double figures. Pace Prosser (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothersvalley) added 13 points while fellow sophomore Lucas Sekasi (Washington, DC/Jackson-Reed) came off the bench to contribute 12 markers. Victor Desmond (Onalaska, Wisc./Onalaska) finished with 10 points and matched Prosser for rebounding honors with six. Sekasi dished out five assists. Eleven players scored.
