Echevarria, Kiser Post Big Upsets as Golden Knights Face Strong Field at Glenville State Quad

Sallot, Crosby go 3-0 on the day

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Gannon men's wrestling team came away with a win in one of its three matches in the Glenville State Quad while facing some of the top competition in Division II. That doesn't indicate just how close the Golden Knights came to upsetting one and possibly two of the nation's best.

When the day was said and done the Golden Knights, ranked 22nd by the NWCA and 11th in The Open Mat rankings, suffered an 18-15 loss to No. 8/13 Lander. That was followed by a narrow 22-21 setback to No. 2/4 Glenville State. They wrapped up the day with a 38-8 win over a Grand Valley State team that came in ranked 25th by The Open Mat. Gannon ended the day with a 3-3 record in dual matches.

Head coach Tom Boyd's team started the day against Lander. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 9-3 lead that included the upset of the day. Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) faced second-ranked Christian Davis. He sent the match into sudden victory with a late takedown the defeated Davis 8-6 in a tiebreaker with a reversal.

As was the case for Gannon all day, they would jump out to a lead but fall behind in the latter weights. Lander would take the lead at 18-12 with wins in four of five matches. Needing a pin to tie the match and send it to criteria Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) won a 7-1 decision over No. 19 Isaac Sheerin.    

A similar scenario ensued against host Glenville State. Gannon led the Pioneers 17-3 after Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) won by fall at 157 lbs. The first half of the match included another big upset as No. 10 Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) picked up a 9-1 major decision over No. 5/6 Gabe Onorato.
Glenville State pulled ahead 22-17 thanks to wins in the next four matches, three by bonus points. Crosby once again dominated his heavyweight bout, winning a 16-3 major decision but unable to pick up the necessary fall.

Gannon won eight of ten bouts to defeat Grand Valley State. That included six bonus point wins, including pins for Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel), Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) and Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch). The final was 38-8.

Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School) (125 lbs.) and Crosby (hwt.) both turned in outstanding days with wins in all three of their matches. Sallot improved to 13-3 and Crosby 17-3. Echevarria (12-3) and Kiser (7-2) won both of their matches at 133 and 149 lbs., respectively. At 157 lbs. Richner won two of three while snapping a personal losing streak. Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) won two of three matches at 174 lbs. with the lone loss to top-ranked Hayden Pummel of Glenville State.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, January 11 hosting Seton Hill in a PSAC match. The action gets underway at 7 p.m. at the Recreation & Wellness Center.
