WHEELING, W.Va. – On a night when Gannon libero
Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) made program history, it was a memorable match for several players and an unforgettable win for all the Golden Knights.
Â
Gannon rallied from a 2-1 deficit after losing two marathon sets to claim a 27-29, 25-17, 29-31, 25-22, 15-11 comeback win over Fairmont State in the second match of the Atlantic Region Crossover at Wheeling University. Gannon improved to 6-4 while Fairmont dropped to 8-3.
Â
"This was a match that both teams deserved to win," Gannon coach
Matt Darling said. "Fairmont played smart and inspired volleyball, but I'm proud of our team for hanging tough tonight."
Hall, a senior defensive, crossed the 2,000-dig mark in her career and then set the Gannon career record. She passed Taryn Graham (2,003 digs from 2011-14) in the second set and finished with 31 digs, moving her career total to 2,022.Â
Â
"We're very happy to be able to celebrate a win in addition to Emma's milestone achievement," Darling said. "She's been one of the premier players in the program and the league for a long time, and she deserves the recognition."
Â
However, Hall wasn't the only one who stood out in the five-set win.
Â
Senior right side hitter
Hailey Koch (Littleton, Col./Dakota Ridge) racked up a career-high 25 kills, while junior setter
Bengisu Arslan (Ankara, Turkey/Private Çankaya Doga Anatolian) dished out a career-best 62 assists.
Â
Carissa Treser (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) continued her recent surge by collecting two career highs on the second consecutive day. She had 19 kills and 19 digs on Friday night.
Â
Senior middle blocker
Ali Sorenson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way East) also came through with 15 kills, and junior outside hitter
Mia Dela Merced (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) collected career highs of 12 kills and 19 digs.
Â
Arslan also contributed defensively with 20 digs, while
Lara Toruner (Istanbul, Turkey/Terakki Foundation) had 14.
Â
Freshman setter
Ava Gainer (Wheeling, W.Va./The Linsly School) also saw significant playing time and had eight assists.
