No. 5 Golden Knights Off to Best Start Since 2015 Following 2-0 Win over UPJ

Respecki and Watkins scored for Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team, ranked fifth in Division II, maintained its perfect start to the season with a 2-0 win over visiting Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday afternoon.

While improving to 4-0-0 and 2-0-0 in the PSAC West, the Golden Knights also maintained their dominance over UPJ. Gannon has now won the last four meetings vs. the Mountain Cats, three by shutouts, while improving to 14-2-0 all-time vs. UPJ. Pitt-Johnstown is now 2-2-0 and 0-2-0 in league play.

Gannon's four straight wins to open the season is the best start since the Golden Knights opened the 2015 season with 17 straight victories.

The Golden Knights played the middle game of a three-game homestand. They are now off until Wednesday, September 25, when they host Clarion to wrap up the home stretch.

How it Happened:
  • Gannon opened the scoring with a goal that displayed just how good Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) is. The sophomore tracked down a loose ball down the right side, then crossed to the middle of the field and left-footed a shot into the upper right corner of the goal from 20 yards out. It was her sixth goal of the young season and came at 15:43.
  • The Golden Knights made it 2-0 at 63:03 thanks to freshman Jessie Watkins (Bowie, Md./Bowie). She gathered in a short pass from Ella Fadale (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) in the middle of the field and while battling with a UPJ defender found the right corner of the net as she was falling to the ground. It is Watkins' second goal of the season.
By the Numbers:
  • Gannon dominated the match statistically against an improved Pitt-Johnstown. The Golden Knights totaled 27 shots compared to just five for UPJ. Shots on goal were 9-4 in favor of Gannon. The Golden Knights also held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) has now allowed just one goal in the season's first four matches. The graduate student had four saves. She has three shutouts this year and nine for her career.
Next for the Golden Knights: Wednesday, September 25 vs. Clarion, 7:00 p.m.
