Gannon Splits with Seton Hill Thanks to Three-Run Rally in Top of the Seventh in Opener

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team wrapped up the 2024 season with a split of a doubleheader at Seton Hill. Gannon rallied for a 7-6 win in the opener before Seton Hill (36-13) claimed the nightcap 3-0.

The Griffins had swept the Golden Knights on Thursday at McConnell Family Stadium but Friday's twinbill left Seton Hill sweating out clinching the top seed in the PSAC West. At the end of the day the Griffins secured the top seed in the Western Division while finishing at 20-8, a game ahead of Indiana (Pa.). The Golden Knights pushed them to the limit thanks to a three-run rally in the seventh inning of the opener.

Gannon ends the 2024 campaign with an 11-34 overall record and 7-21 in the PSAC West. Third-year head coach DJ Cannon was forced to endure numerous injuries to key personnel, including a pitching staff that was decimated by injuries. But the season also gave a promising freshmen class the opportunity to see significant playing time.

Game 1 – Gannon 7, Seton Hill 6
A pair of freshmen, Alex Bemis (Monroe, Ohio/Monroe) and Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour), drove in runs as Gannon scored three times in the top of the seventh for a 7-6 lead and Josh Quartley (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) came in and retired Seton Hill in the bottom of the seventh to clinch another big upset in recent weeks. The Golden Knights rallied on several occasions in the back-and-forth affair. Seton Hill opened the game with two runs in the bottom of the first for a 2-0 lead. The Golden Knights answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Following an out Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) singled and Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) tripled to right for the first run Vega evened the score at 2-2 in Brendan Koroly's (Mars, Pa./Pittsburgh Central Catholic) two-out RBI single. Gannon grabbed a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth. The freshmen combination of Bemis and Walker got things started with Bemis hitting his 15th double of the season and Walker following with an RBI single to center. Another freshman, Jake Boynar (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville), settled in to hold the Griffins scoreless for the next three innings and departed after four innings with a 3-2 lead. Seton Hill greeted reliever Logan Ayres (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) with a run in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, but Gannon took a 4-3 lead in the top of the sixth on Drew Stangelo's (Uniontown, Ohio/North Canton Hoover) RBI single. Stangelo is yet another freshman. The Griffins countered with three runs in the sixth against Ayres and Ian Soto (Florida, Puerto Rico/Academia Cristiana de Manati) for a 6-4 lead. With one out Reece Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was hit by a pitch and Koroly doubled to put the tying runs on second and third. Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell) drove in Colvin with a sacrifice fly and Bemis knotted the game at 6-6 with a single to center driving in Koroly. Walker followed with the game-winning hit, a double to right scoring Bemis all the way from first. DJ Cannon called on Josh Quartley (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) to get the final three outs in the seventh, facing the heart of the Seton Hill order. The redshirt sophomore retired the first two batters but then ran into trouble. Seton Hill's top hitter, Jack Oberdorf, extended the inning with a single and an error put runners on first and third. Quartley induced Owen Sabol into a groundout to second for his first career save. Walker, who just recently entered the lineup due to injuries, was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs, while Bemis and Koroly also had two of Gannon's nine hits and drove in a run each. Boynar pitched the first four innings, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out five. Soto got three outs in the sixth to pick up his first career win.

Game 2 – Seton Hill 3, Gannon 0
Andino Vecchiolla and Ian Korn combined on a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts as Seton Hill shut out the Golden Knights. Gannon loaded the bases on a hit by pitch and two walks with one out in the first but could not score. Seton Hill took advantage of a hit by pitch and an error to score twice in the bottom of the frame. The Griffins added an insurance run in the fourth. The Golden Knights were limited to four hits, singles by Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell), Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside), Nick Walker (McKees Rocks, Pa./Montour) and Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). Gannon had just two runners reach second base after the first inning. Four Gannon pitchers held Seton Hill to five hist. Ryan Hood (Latrobe, Pa./Derry Area) and Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) each threw two scoreless innings.
