Golden Knights Strike for 23 Runs, 28 Hits in Sweep at California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The eclipse doesn't arrive until Monday but on Sunday the Gannon softball team's bats were lights out. The Golden Knights scored 23 runs and pounded out 28 hits to sweep California (Pa.) by scores of 10-1 and 13-4. The first game ended after five innings and the second after six.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-9 overall and 6-4 in the PSAC West with the pair of wins while Cal dropped to 9-10 and 7-4, respectively.

In both games Gannon jumped on the Vulcans early and built big leads. The Golden Knights led 8-0 after two innings in the opener and ended with 11 hits. In the nightcap, it was 6-1 after two innings and Gannon pushed five across the plate in the sixth inning. Gannon totaled a season-high 17 hits.

A total of nine players had double-figure hits in the two games but no one stood out more than Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic). The redshirt junior finished the day going 4-for-7 with 7 RBIs. She hit a home run in each game.

Gannon faces a busy week with four doubleheaders in the span of five days. It begins with a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 9 vs. Edinboro at McConnell Family Stadium.

Natalia Mallozzi vs. CalGame 1 – Gannon 10, California (Pa.) 1 (5 innings)
Gannon scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second to just out to an imposing advantage. Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) plated the first run of the game with an RBI single and Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) and Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) each walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-0. Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) and Mallozzi hit home runs in the second inning. Whipkey, a member of the Cal team a year ago, hit a two-run shot and three batters later Mallozzi followed with a three-run blast to center. Gannon added an unearned run courtesy of an error in the fourth inning and Olivia Eckels (Saint Marys, Pa./Saint Marys Area) stole home on the front end of a double steal with Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) for the final run in the fifth. Mallozzi drove in four runs while going 1-for-2. Whipkey was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) 2-for-3 with an RBI. Vasi went 2-for-2 with an RBI and Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) had two hits in four at bats.
