Girman Powers Golden Knights to Pair of Wins at IUP

INDIANA, Pa. – Welcome back Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette)! The junior outfielder powered Gannon to a doubleheader sweep at Indiana (Pa.) as the final week of the PSAC campaign began. The Golden Knights continued to wield hot bats with 21 runs and 27 hits in the two contests.

Gannon held off a late IUP rally to win the opener 9-6, belting out 13 hits. In the nightcap the Golden Knights scored five runs in the opening inning and rode a 14-hit attack for a 12-2 win in five innings. Gannon has now won nine of its last ten games to improve to 23-11 overall and 18-6 in the PSAC West while IUP is 24-21 but 10-15 in league play.

As for Girman, all she did was go 4-for-8 with 7 RBIs in the twinbill. She hit a home run in each game and has now gone deep in each of the last three games. She added a double in the first game.

A year ago Girman threatened the season record for home runs with 12. She got off to a slow start this season but has picked up steam of late. Heading into Saturday's doubleheader with California (Pa.) she had driven in just six runs and had not hit a home run. In the last four games she has three home runs and 13 RBIs.

Gannon is right back in action on Tuesday with another PSAC West doubleheader. Slippery Rock visits McConnell Family Stadium for the final home doubleheader of the season. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.

Game 1 – Gannon 9, Indiana (Pa.) 6
Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) each hit two-run homers as Gannon led 9-3 going into the bottom of the seventh before IUP made things interesting. Pitching for the fifth time in seven days, Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) breezed through the IUP lineup in five of the seven innings, but in the other two frames the Crimson Hawks scored three runs. Girman gave the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead with a home run in the first inning. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) made it 3-0 in the third with an RBI single and Girman followed with a double to drive in Vasi and make it 4-0. Gannon expanded the lead to 7-0 with three runs in the fourth. Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in the first run with a single and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) followed with her third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left center. IUP responded with three runs on four hits and an error to make it 7-3. Ryan added her third RBI of the game in the sixth and Vasi made it 9-3 with a run-scoring single. The Crimson Hawks refused to quietly, scoring three unearned runs. IUP closed to 9-6 and had the bases loaded with two outs but Lenda induced a grounder for the final out. Girman and Ryan each went 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs while Vasi was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs to lead the 13-hit attack. Lenda won her 12th straight decision to improve to 13-2 on the season. The junior gave up just two earned runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out seven.

Game 2 – Gannon 12, Indiana (Pa.) 2
The Gannon offense picked up where it left off in game two pounding out 14 hits. Five of the first six Golden Knights reached base to start the game. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) opened with a double and Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) quickly made it 2-0 with her fifth home run of the season. After an out, Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) was hit by a pitch and Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) singled. Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) stepped to the plate and hit Gannon's second home run of the inning and her third in the last three games, a three-run shot to center to make it 5-0. An IUP home run in the second made it 5-1 but Gannon scored two runs in the third, a run in the fourth, and four in the fifth. Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) and Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) both had groundouts to drive in runs in the fourth. Girman drove in her fourth run of the game with a single in the fourth, and the fifth featured an RBI single by Whipkey, a Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) RBI groundout, and a two-run single by Vasi. Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell), meanwhile, was dominant in the circle while improving to 3-2. The freshman allowed three hits in the five-inning complete game, striking out seven with a walk. Whipkey was 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while Girman was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs and Fox, Ryan and Vasi had two hits apiece.
