Hot Bats, Impressive Pitching Lead Gannon to Sweep at Clarion

CLARION, Pa. – The Gannon bats remained hot with 27 hits and pitchers Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) and Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) allowed just six hits as the Golden Knights swept a doubleheader at Clarion on Tuesday afternoon. The Golden Knights won the opener 14-0 and came back for a 10-1 win in the nightcap.

Gannon has now won seven of eight games while improving to 16-10 overall and 11-5 in the PSAC West. Clarion slipped to 10-22 and 5-11, respectively, while losing five straight games. The two teams will meet again in two days on Thursday, April 18 at McConnell Family Stadium. Gannon is in the midst of playing four doubleheaders in five days.

Game 1 – Gannon 14, Clarion 0 (5 innings)
The Golden Knights pounded out 14 hits and wasted little time scoring. They scored three runs in the first, four in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth. Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) drove in the first run of the game with a single and Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) followed with a two-run single. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) remained red hot with an RBI single to center in the second inning and Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) followed with a three-run homer, her second of the season. Gannon made it 9-0 in the third on Jules Ryan's (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) two-run single and Mallozzi singled to left to make it 10-0. Gannon would add four runs in the fourth on a two-run double by Lynn Porter (Hanover, Mass./Ardrey Kell) and Mallozzi's RBI single. Mallozzi ended the day at 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, while Vasi also drove in three runs. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) and Katie Sidare (Rochester, N.Y./Victor Central) were each 2-for-3, while Ryan was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois), meanwhile, limited the Golden Eagles to just two hits in five innings with a walk and a strikeout. The junior improved to 9-2 while winning her eighth straight decision.
