Freshmen, Vasi Lead Golden Knights to Pair of One-Run Wins on Day Two of Glenville State Invitational

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The Gannon softball team came away with a pair of one-run wins on Sunday afternoon in day two of the Glenville State Invitational. Thanks to a 9-8 win over Frostburg State and a 7-6 victory over West Virginia State the Golden Knights now own a three-game winning streak while improving to 4-4 on the young season.

In the opening win vs. Frostburg State the Golden Knights rallied from an 8-5 deficit to push across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the nightcap they held off a late rally by West Virginia State. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) picked up the win in relief in both contests.

Gannon is back in action next Sunday, March 3 with a doubleheader at D'Youville.

Game 1:  Gannon 9, Frostburg State 8
The back-and-forth game saw Frostburg State jump out to a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings. Gannon scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning thanks to three hits. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) opened the frame with a double down the left field line, and moved up to third with one out on a single by Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East). The Golden Knights then worked a double steal, with Mallozzi stealing home.  After a fly out Helena Wolbert (Grove City, Pa./Grove City Area) hit two-out double to center to score Vasi. Gannon took a 5-3 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mia Ryan (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) had the first of four hits in the inning with a single and Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) followed with a base hit. Following a pair of outs Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) pinch hit and blasted a three-run homer to center. The Bobcats answered with five runs in the top of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead, but the Golden Knights rallied in the bottom of the inning to knot the score at 8-8. Wolbert opened the inning with a single and Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) pinch ran. Fox stole second and moved to third on a Jules Ryna single. A Mia Ryan (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) RBI ground out plated Fox and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) scored on a double by Smerick. With two outs Mallozzi's single tied the game at 8-8. Frostburg State had a runner at third with one out in the top of the seventh but Vasi pitched out of the jam. Clontz led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk and Vasi moved her to second with a single. Abbey Girman's (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) bunt was fielded by the pitcher but her throw to third was errant and Clontz raced home to score the winning run. Vasi went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead a 14-hit attack. The senior also threw a scoreless 1.1 innings to pick up the win. Smerick was 3-for-4 and Wolbert 2-for-3. Both are freshman.

Game 2:  Gannon 7, West Virginia State 6
The Golden Knights took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the third. WVSU opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first but Gannon answered with a two-run homer by Jenna Clontz (Kittanning, Pa./Armstrong) in the bottom of the inning, her second of the day. Back came the Yellow Jackets with a pair of runs in the second. A wild bottom of the third saw Gannon take advantage of three hits and four errors to score three times. Mia Ryan (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored the first run courtesy of an error after earlier singling. Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) also singled and reached home eventually on an error. Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored on the fourth error of the inning. A WVSU run in the fifth cut the lead to 5-4 but the Golden Knights once again answered immediately with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Smerick doubled and stole third. Natalia Mallozzi (Woodbridge, Ontario/Father Bressani Catholic) was hit by a pitch and Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) pinch ran. She immediately stole second and Clontz single to left drove in both Smerick and Fox for a 7-4 lead. The Yellow Jackets closed to within 7-6 in the top of the seventh on a two-out, two-run homer. Gabi Vasi (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore East) retired the next batter on a fly out to center to end the game. Vasi threw the final 4.1 innings in relief with four strikeouts to claim her second win of the day. Freshmen Clontz and Smerick were each a perfect 3-for-3 on the day, with Clontz driving in four runs. Smerick, meanwhile, stole three bases.
