Golden Knights Wrap Up Play in Music City Festival with Pair of Games

SMYRNA, Tenn. – The Gannon softball team wrapped up competition in the 2024 Music City Festival on Saturday with a pair of contests. After splitting a pair of games on Friday the Golden Knights fell to Drury 13-8 in their opener on Saturday, then dropped a 9-3 decision to 10th-ranked Indianapolis later in the day.

The teams were greeted by cold temperatures that delayed play early in the day after rain had eliminated a set of games on Friday.

A young Gannon squad will return to action next weekend in the Glenville State Tournament. On Saturday, February 24 the Golden Knights play host Glenville State and West Virginia Wesleyan. On Sunday, February 25 they meet Frostburg State and West Virginia State.

Drury 13, Gannon 8
Gannon jumped out to an 8-0 lead only to see Drury score 13 unanswered runs. Freshman Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong) led off the game with an inside the park home run, and the Golden Knights plated seven runs in the top of the third. Abbey Girman (Bridgeville, Pa./South Fayette) drove in the first run with an RBI double, and Smerick drove in two more with a single. Those were the lone two hits of the inning as Gannon took advantage of three walks and three errors. The Lady Panthers answered back with seven runs in the bottom of the inning, driving starter Katie Armstrong (Lower Burrell, Pa./Burrell) from the game. Drury had six hits in the inning. The xx tied the game in bottom of the fifth inning at 8-8, then pushed across five runs in the bottom of the sixth. The final four runs were unearned and came on an inside the park grand slam. Smerick led an eight-hit attack with a 2-for-4 effort with 3 RBIs. Alaina Whipkey (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) was 2-for-3 with a stolen base.

No. 10 Indianapolis 9, Gannon 3
The Greyhounds pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of four Gannon errors to score five unearned runs. Indy took a 4-0 lead with four runs in the top of the second, but Alaina Whipkey's (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) RBI single in the third cut the deficit to 4-1. Whipkey's hit drove in Helena Wolbert (Grove City, Pa./Grove City Area), who had singled. Both teams scored twice in the fourth inning. Gannon's came on an error and a sacrifice fly by Emma Smerick (Ford City, Pa./Armstrong), making it 6-3. The Greyhounds pulled away with three runs in the top of the fifth. The Golden Knights finished with five hits, including a double by Mia Ryan (Zelienople, Pa./Seneca Valley).
