Golden Knights Open PSAC Schedule with Impressive Win over Shippensburg

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team returned to the mat for the first time since November 23 on Sunday hosting Shippensburg in their PSAC opener. The Golden Knights, ranked seventh in the NWCA Division II poll and 12th according to The Open Mat, handed the Raiders a 42-5 defeat to improve to 2-1. Shippensburg is now 3-4. The match was moved back a day from Saturday due to Sunday due to travel and weather conditions.

The Golden Knights ran off wins in the seven bouts, four by bonus points, before Shippensburg's Owen Koch won by technical fall at 184 lbs. Gannon ended the match with two more wins by bonus points with a major decision and technical fall.

So dominant was Gannon's performance that the Golden Knights did not give up a takedown before the 174 lb. bout. In all Gannon totaled xx takedowns compared to five for the Raiders.

The match got underway at 125 lbs. with Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School), ranked 16th by The Open Mat, winning by technical fall at 3:47 by an 18-3 score. He jumped out to a 13-2 lead after one period thanks to three takedowns. Sallot is now 8-1.

Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) followed with Gannon's lone fall of the match, pinning AJ Stayton at 2:13 after a pair of takedowns. Ranked second by The Open Mat and third by the NWCA, the redshirt junior remained undefeated at 7-0.

Brock Christian (Perry, Ohio/Perry) (5-3) followed with a technical fall at 141 lbs., winning by a score of 17-0 at 5:54. The redshirt freshman had three takedowns and piled up eight back points on a pair of moves. Isaac Piatek (Garner, N.C./Cleveland), another redshirt freshman, made his debut in the starting lineup at 149 lbs. with a 17-2 tech. fall at 3:41. Now 8-3, Piatek led 14-2 after the first period thanks to a pair of takedowns and two four-point near falls.

Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) (6-1), ranked fourth by the NWCA and tenth by The Open Mat, picked up a forfeit win at 157 lbs.

The best match of the day took place at 165 lbs., where Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic), ranked fourth by the NWCA and eighth by The Open Mat, took on Shippensburg's Anthony DeAngelo, who came in at 10-2. Following a scoreless first period Coreno opened the second period with an escape. He picked up a riding time for a 2-0 decision when he rode DeAngelo for all two minutes of the third quarter. Coreno improved to 5-2.

Christian Scheller (Saxonburg, Pa./Mars) (2-2), who normally competes at 165 lbs. moved up to 174 lbs. to fill in for normal starter Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High). Scheller was aggressive from the outset against Trey Shoemaker and came away with an 8-4 decision. He took an early 3-0 lead with a takedown but was tied at 4-4 after one period. The redshirt sophomore went ahead with a takedown midway through the second period, then rode out Shoemaker in the third to finish with close to three minutes in riding time.

Shippensburg's Owen Koch provided the Raiders with a 19-3 technical fall (6:34) over Shane Davidson (Almond, N.Y./Wellsville) at 184 lbs.  Davidson, now 3-4, was making his first appearance at that weight after dropping down from 197 lbs.

At 197 lbs. former heavyweight Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) has emerged as the starter. He used a big third period to post a 10-2 major decision over Diesel Koser, who came in at 8-2. Leading 1-0 after two periods, Reese opened the third period with a takedown. A Koser reversal cut the lead to 5-2 with 40 seconds left. An escape and takedown with 20 seconds remaining made it 9-2 and Reese gained a point for riding time while improving to 2-0.

Heavyweight Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), the top-ranked wrestler according to The Open Mat and fourth in the NWCA poll, was methodical in his 19-4 technical fall over Connor Livingston, with the end coming at 4:56. Crosby had six takedowns in the match while boosting his record to 9-1.

Gannon will break for final exams before wrestling one last time in 2024. The Golden knights will face a competitive field at the Midwest Classic on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 in Indianapolis, Ind.
