Crosby Leads Four Medalists as Gannon Finishes 18th at Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Thanks to four medalists the Gannon men's wrestling team finished in 18th place at the 45th Annual Midwest Classic. A total of 43 teams in the competed in the tournament.
 
Wisconsin-Parkside finished as the team champion with 147.0 points, coming back on Sunday to pass defending national champion Central Oklahoma (135.0). Glenville State was third with 127.0 points, with McKendree (102.5) and Tiffin (94.5) rounding out the top five. Gannon totaled 58.5 points.
 
Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) led four Golden Knights to reach the stand as he took home fifth place at heavyweight. Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) was sixth at 174 lbs. while Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) came in seventh at 149 lbs. Jerry Echeverria wrapped up Gannon's medalists coming in eighth at 133 lbs.
 
Four Golden Knights reached this morning's quarterfinals but Crosby was the lone one to advance to the semifinals. Ranked first by The Open Mat and fourth by the NWCA, the grad transfer from Bucknell faced four straight ranked wrestlers beginning with a 12-8 decision over No. 10 Cale Gray of Indianapolis in the quarterfinals.
 
Crosby lost in the semifinals to No. 8 Ryan Herman of Maryville 9-3 and followed that with a 4-2 setback to No. 12 Jake Swirple of Minot State in the consolation semifinals.
 
That left Crosby facing seventh-ranked Lloyd Reynolds of Wisconsin-Parkside in the fifth place match. After failing to get a takedown in his previous two bouts he came out with a vengeance. Crosby recorded six takedowns before ending the match with a fall at 4:20. Crosby is now 14-3.
 
Redshirt freshman Jackson was impressive in his first appearance at the Midwest Classic. Competing at 174 lbs., he went 4-3 over the two days including four matches against ranked opponents on Sunday. He lost to No. 8 Matt Ortiz  of McKendree in a tiebreaker 3-2 in the quarterfinals before remaining alive with a 6-0 decision over Lake Erie's Vincent Scaramuzzino and a 5-2 upset of No. 14 Wyatt Reisz of Colorado School of Mines. He nearly upset top-ranked Josh Kenny of Grand Valley State before Kenny rallied late for a 16-11 win. In the fifth place match he dropped a 13-8 decision to No. 20 Lawson Losee of Upper Iowa to finish sixth. Jackson is now 10-3.
 
Kiser was making his first appearance of the season while competing at 149 lbs. A transfer from Army and a redshirt junior, Kiser took home seventh place while winning five of seven matches. Like Crosby and Jackson, he faced four ranked wrestlers on Sunday. He battled third-ranked Cody Thompson of Colorado School of Mines in the quarterfinals before dropping a 10-5 decision. He upset No. 11 Joey Semerad of McKendree for a second time in the tournament by a 5-4 decision before losing a 7-1 decision to No. 7 Wyatt Turnquist of Northern State. In the seventh place match he defeated No. 12 Ethen Doty of Upper Iowa 6-1 to bring home seventh place.
 
Ranked second by The Open Mat and third by the NWCA, Echevarria (10-3) place eighth after reaching the quarterfinals. He lost by major decision to No. 13 Max Shore of Tiffin 12-2 before moving on with an 8-5 decision over No. 20 Oran Huff of Colorado Mesa. That was followed by back-to-back losses by major decision to No. 9 Jimmy Anderson of Ouachita Baptist) and No. 8 Peter Rolle of Central Oklahoma, the latter in the seventh place match.
