In a winner-take-all match between the top two teams in the PSAC West, the No. 5 Golden Knights and No. 23 Crimson Hawks battled to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field.
Gannon, who was ranked fifth in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 poll along with first in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, concluded the regular season as PSAC West regular season champions after holding a 13-0-4 record and 10-0-4 in PSAC action following the 1-1 draw with IUP.
The Crimson Hawks, who were ranked No. 23 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II Top 25 poll along with third in the NCAA Atlantic Region rankings, ended the regular season with a 11-1-4 record and 9-1-4 PSAC slate.
Even though the Golden Knights held a 6-3 advantage in first half shots, IUP struck the scoreless contest at the 30:20 mark to take a 1-0 lead. With 6:15 remaining in the contest, a foul from the Crimson Hawks in the box set up a penalty kick.
Grace Emanuel (Erie, Pa./McDowell) buried the ball in the back of the net to knot the score at one apiece.
The Golden Knights finished the match with 11 shots (six on target) and held a 14-2 advantage in corner kicks. Gannon goalkeeper
Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) secured three saves in 90 minutes of action. Coming into the contest, the Gannon defense had not allowed a goal since October 26 against California (Pa.).
With the tie, the Golden Knights clinched the No. 1 seed in the PSAC West and will host Pitt-Johnstown on Tuesday, November 12. The PSAC Quarterfinal matchup between the Mountain Cats and Golden Knights is slated for 4:00 p.m. at McConnell Family Stadium.
The top four teams from each PSAC division advance to the PSAC Tournament. Winners of the quarterfinals which will be held on Tuesday, November 12, will compete at the higher ranked western divisional site with a chance to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament.
