No. 2 Golden Knights Suffer First Loss at Ohio Dominican

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Gannon women's basketball team tasted defeat for the first time in 2024-25 with a 73-62 loss at Ohio Dominican. The Golden Knights had climbed to second in the WBCA Division II Top 25 on Tuesday and were third in the D2CCA poll. They drop to 9-1 while Ohio Dominican won its second straight game to improve to 3-2.
 
The game was much closer than the final score indicated. The game featured seven ties and 14 lead changes. The two teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 52-52. After trailing by five points with four minutes remaining Gannon pulled within a point at 63-62 on Bri Claxon's (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) pull-up jumper with 1:40 left to play. But the Panthers scored the final ten points of the game to pull away at the end.
 
Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) returned to the lineup after missing the last two games with an injury. But post player Andrea Maibach (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) missed the contest after leaving in the third quarter with an injury against East Stroudsburg.
 
The Golden Knights were unable to overcome the ODU duo of Brynn Mullet and Sarah Ochs, who combined for 55 points. Mullet had a game-high 29 points and Ochs had a career-best 26 points.
 
Gannon returns to action on Sunday, December 1 playing at D'Youville.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
Gannon trailed 17-12 after one quarter and Ohio Dominican gained its largest lead of the night at 29-17 with 5:31 left until the half. Gannon closed to 36-31 at the half, holding the Panthers without a point for the final 3 minutes, 30 seconds.
 
The Golden Knights regained the lead for the first time since early in the game thanks to a 10-0 run early in the third quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Carissa Dunham (Fairview, Pa./Villa Maria) gave Gannon a 41-39 lead with 6:25 left in the quarter. There were five lead changes the rest of the period with Ochs hitting two free throws to tie the game at 52-52 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
Gannon scored the first basket on a Trinitee Harris (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) layup at 9:45 for a 54-52 lead. It was their final lead of the night. Ohio Dominican scored the next five points and led the rest of the night.
 
Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) pulled Gannon to within a point at 63-62 with 1:40 remaining on a pull up jumper. But the next six points for the Panthers as Gannon missed its final five shots.

BY THE NUMBERS
Gannon shot 39.7 percent from the floor (25-of-63), making 6-of-22 3-pointers, while Ohio Dominican came in at 44.9 percent (22-of-49). The Panthers were 8-of-22 on 3-pointers and held a huge edge from beyond the arc. Gannon attempted just seven free throws, making six, while ODU was 21-of-24 at the charity stripe.
 
Ohio Dominican was forced into 21 turnovers compared to 18 for Gannon.  The Panthers held a 35-31 advantage on the glass.
 
Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) led Gannon with 21 points while playing in her home state. The junior guard made 9-of-12 field goals including a 3-pointer. Carissa Dunham (Fairview, Pa./Villa Maria) added 16 points, going 4-of-10 on 3-pointers, while adding three steals.
 
After missing the last two games with an injury Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) returned and contributed 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Maddy Wheatley (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra) added six rebounds.
 
Brynn Mullet led the Panthers with 29 points, adding seven rebounds. She made four 3-pointers. Sarah Ochs added 24 points and seven boards while Gabby Stare was also in double digits with 10 points.

Gannon returns to action on Sunday, December 1 traveling to Buffalo to play at D'Youville.
