Reese, Crosby Win by Major Decision to Lead Gannon to 23-17 Win over Lake Erie

ERIE, Pa. – Trailing 18-16 entering the final two bouts Gannon turned to its standout heavyweight and a former heavyweight to rally for a 23-17 win over Lake Erie on Saturday. The match took place at Gannon's Recreation and Wellness Center.

The lead changed hands five times between the two nationally-ranked teams before Gannon won major decisions at 197 lbs. and heavyweight. Gannon came in tied for eighth in the NWCA Top 25 while Lake Erie was 23rd.

The Storm led 18-16 after Vincent Scaramuzzino won by fall over Gaetano Savelli (Kirtland, OH/Kirtland High) at 184 lbs. Former heavyweight Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) took to the mat for the first time this year wrestling at 197 lbs. Following a scoreless first period with Quinn Gorman, Reese dominated the rest of the way for an 11-1 major decision. He used an escape and takedown for a 4-0 lead then added two more takedowns in the third period.

That left Gannon with a 20-18 lead and Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) needing a win to clinch the match. Ranked first by The Open Mat and sixth by the NWCA, the grad transfer from Bucknell controlled Tyler Shellenbarger the entire match and posted a 16-6 major decision to improve to 8-1. Crosby finished with five takedowns.

Gannon jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School) improved to 7-1 at 125 lbs. with an 11-1 major decision over Braden Hahlen. Third-ranked Jerry Echevarria (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) followed with a tight 11-9 decision over Anthony Sagaris. Echevarria (6-0) led 10-4 after one period but had to hold off Sagaris in the final seconds.

Lake Erie grabbed an 8-7 lead with a decision at 141 lbs. and a technical fall at 149 lbs., but Ethan Richner (Bellefonte, Pa./Bellefonte Area High) gave the lead back to the Golden Knights at 10-8 with a 10-3 decision over Matthew Kaufmann at 157 lbs. Richner, now 5-1, is ranked sixth by the NWCA and tenth by The Open Mat.

In the feature match of the day Jack Haskin won an 11-2 major decision over Nick Coreno (Willoughby, Ohio/Lake Catholic) (4-2) at 165 lbs. Both are former All-Americans.

Gannon's Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High) picked up a forfeit win at 174 lbs. to remain undefeated at 6-0 before the Storm regained the lead with Scaramuzzino's fall at 184. That set the stage for Gannon's rally over the final two weight classes.

Gannon returns to action on Saturday, December 7 hosting Shippensburg in a PSAC dual.
