No. 11 Golden Knights Remain Perfect with 78-40 Win Over Davis & Elkins

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's basketball team remained undefeated on Sunday afternoon with a 78-40 win over Davis & Elkins. The contest was the final game of the Atlantic Region Challenge hosted by Gannon at the Hagerty Family Events Center. Gannon is ranked 11th in the WBCA Division II Preseason Top 25.

The Golden Knights never trailed and head coach Cleve Wright was able to substitute liberally throughout the game. Gannon is now 5-0 on the young season while Davis & Elkins dipped to 0-2.

The victory gives Wright 399 career wins. He is now in his 21st season as a head coach and has a 399-209 overall record. The Golden Knights will try to present him with win number 400 on Wednesday, November 13 when Daemen visits the Hagerty Family Events Center. The Wildcats are currently 0-2 with a pair of close losses but were 23-8 last year and like Gannon reached the Elite Eight.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Any drama in the outcome quickly disappeared although Gannon did open the game with seven straight missed shots. Davis & Elkins didn't score during that period either. Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster) finally broke the drought with a 3-pointer, and the junior guard followed with a jumper for a 5-0 lead. A D&E basket made it 5-2, but Maddy Wheatley (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra) answered with a 3-pointer and Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) added a layup and free throw for an 11-2 lead at the 6:23 mark.

Andrea Maibach's (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) layup gave Gannon its first double figure lead at 15-4 with just under five minutes to play. D&E's deficit never got under double figures after that. Gannon closed the first quarter with a 24-5 lead, holding the Senators to 2-of-14 shooting.

Head coach Cleve Wright took advantage of the large early lead to substitute liberally the rest of the game. Ten of the 12 players who appeared in the game scored.
