Mentzer Leads Group of Six Medalists at Ohio Intercollegiate Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio – A total of 21 Gannon wrestlers competed in the 2024 Bob Del Rosa Ohio Intercollegiate Open hosted by Case Western Reserve on Sunday. Six Golden Knights returned with medals, led by Luke Menzter and Dorian Crosby (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). Wrestling unattached, Mentzer won the Freshman & Sophomore Division at 141 lbs. while Crosby came in second at heavyweight in the Open Division.

Mentzer went 5-0 on the day. The sophomore won by fall at 5:23 over Liam Hatgas of Ohio Wesleyan in the finals. It was his second fall of the day.

Crosby won a pair of 3-0 decisions to reach the finals. He met Cleveland State's Dan Bucknavich in the finals. Bucknavich would prevail 4-2 thanks to a takedown midway through the second period.

Wrestling unattached, Landon Lazarek (Hilton, NY/Hilton Central High School) lost to Chase Crutchley of Case Western in the finals by a 14-1 score to take home second at 174 lbs. in the Freshman & Sophomore Division. Lazarek had a technical fall and major decision while going 3-1 on the day.

In the Open Division Isaac Piatek (Garner, N.C./Cleveland) (3-2) and Caleb Butterfield (Erie, Pa./McDowell) (2-2) took home sixth place at 149 and 165 lbs. Kenny Schmitz (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) (5-1) was fifth at 125 lbs. while competing in the Freshman & Sophomore Division. Butterfield was wrestling unattached.
