Block party! Gannon volleyball team gets 16 blocks in sweep of Pitt-Johnstown

Senior Ali Sorenson leads the way with nine total blocks, including six solo

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon volleyball team now has several types of winning streaks going.

Coach Matt Darling's Golden Knights have won 11 matches in row overall.

They've won all 10 of their PSAC West matches.

After Friday's 25-13, 25-16, 25-17 win over Pitt-Johnstown at Hagerty Family Events Center, the Knights have won five consecutive matches by sweep. Dating to a 3-1 non-conference win over Daemen on Oct. 15, Gannon has won a whopping 18 consecutive sets.

With the win over UPJ, the Golden Knights improved to 18-5 overall and moved closer to clinching the No. 1 Western seed for the PSAC Tournament. Pitt-Johnstown dropped to 16-7 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC West.

"This is the time of year where if you want to get the W's in a little more convincing fashion, I guess this is the time to do it," said Darling, whose team had 16 blocks to UPJ's one block. "We blocked very, very well. To have that many blocks is one thing. To have the advantage we did – I think we were plus-15 in blocking."

In large part because of the blocking, Gannon limited UPJ to a -.024 hitting percentage for the match. Meanwhile, Gannon hit .254.

How it happened:

Gannon rolled to a victory in the first set while getting 14 kills to UPJ's seven. GU also had 5 blocks on the way to a 25-13 win in the set.

The Knights had another outstanding blocking performance in the second set with seven blocks. Gannon also compiled 13 kills as it rolled to a 25-16 victory.

The third set was tougher. UPJ rolled to a 9-3 lead before Carissa Treser (Sewickley, Pa./North Allegheny) served eight consecutive points to give GU a 12-9 lead. The Knights built their lead to as many as seven points at 21-14 before Ali Sorenson's (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way East) kill clinched a 25-17 set and the match victory.

By the numbers:

Sorenson, a 6-foot-2 senior middle blocker, continued her outstanding defensive play with six solo blocks and three block assists.  Lauren Atwell (Mars, Pa./Mars Area), a 6-foot-1 middle blocker, added three solo blocks and four block assists. Senior Hailey Koch (Littleton, Col./Dakota Ridge), a 6-foot-3 right-side hitter, added four block assists.

Senior outside hitter Journey Blevins (Richwood, Ohio/North Union) paced Gannon with 14 kills while Koch had nine and Treser added eight.

Junior setter Bengisu Arslan (Ankara, Turkey/Private Çankaya Doga Anatolian) compiled 35 assists and 12 digs. Senior libero Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led GU with 18 digs while Blevins and senior Lara Toruner (Istanbul, Turkey/Terakki Foundation) added nine digs apiece.
