ERIE, Pa. – In soccer, the most important statistic is always the number of goals scored, no matter how many shots each team takes.
That was the lesson again on Wednesday afternoon as the Gannon women's soccer team and Indiana (Pa.) played to a scoreless tie in a PSAC West match at McConnell Family Stadium.
Gannon outshot IUP 34-1 in the game, including 11-1 in shots on goal. However, the Crimson Hawks escaped with a tie thanks in large part to the play of Makenna Yarrow, who made 11 saves to earn the shutout.
The Golden Knights'
Morgan Sinan (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) also earned a shutout although she had to make just one save because of the outstanding play of the Gannon defense in front of her.
First-place Gannon stayed unbeaten as it moved to 4-0-3 (15 points) in the PSAC West and 6-0-3 overall. IUP stayed right behind Gannon as it to 5-1-2 and 4-1-2. The Crimson Hawks are in a second-place tie with Slippery Rock, one point behind GU.
Sophomore forward
Brooklyn Respecki (McKean, Pa./General McLane) led Gannon with 10 shots, including three on goal. Senior midfielder
Jamie Seneca (Plum, Pa./Plum) added six shots and also had three shots on goal.
Sophomore defender
Hannah Shepard (Erie, Pa./McDowell) contributed three shots on goal, and
June Monasterio (Bilbao, Spain/Claret Askartza) added two, but each time Yarrow was able to make the save.
What's ahead:
Gannon will visit Pitt-Johnstown on Saturday at noon. The Golden Knights opened the PSAC West season with a 2-0 home-field win over UPJ.
