Golden Knights Overcome Adverse Weather Conditions, Ashland for 3-1 Victory

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team overcame a strong Ashland team and changing weather conditions to improve to 3-0-0 on the young season with a 3-1 victory over the Golden Eagles on Wednesday afternoon at McConnell Family Stadium.

The Golden Knights wrapped up a three-game homestand to open the season and now play four straight matches on the road before returning on September 27 for a showdown with crosstown rival Mercyhurst. The road stretch gets underway with a trip to Wilmington (Del.) on Saturday, September 9. The Wildcats were 10-5-5 a year ago, with Gannon winning a 1-0 decision. They are off to a 1-0-2 start following a 1-1 tie with West Chester on Wednesday.

Gannon avenged a 1-0 loss at Ashland last year, subduing an Eagles team that finished as the Great Midwest Athletic Conference tournament champions a year ago and reached the NCAA Division II Tournament. Ashland leaves Erie with a very deceiving 0-3-0 record while facing three teams that were a combined 43-10-7 a year ago.

The match began under blazing sunshine on a humid afternoon with temperatures in the high 80's. The Golden Knights gained a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute as Sverre Orten (Orsta, Norway/Aalesund vgs) scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Tinashe Katsande (Norwich, England/Dereham Sixth Form College). Following a takeaway at midfield, Katsande fired a crossing pass from the right wing to Orten, who found the back of the net in the left side.

The first half ended with ominous skies and gusting winds as a front approached, with Gannon holding on to the 1-0 lead despite being outshot 5-3.
Now playing with the wind, Gannon took a 2-0 lead on another quick goal to start the second half. Pau Ferrer's (Valencia, Spain/ISES Isabel de Villena) crossing pass found Herman Aanberg (Hamar, Norway/Wang Toppidrett Oslo), whose touch pass to Benjamin Querling (Zuelpich, Germany/Emil-Fischer Gymnasium) resulted in Querling's first goal the 47:36 mark.

Play was stopped for over an hour midway through the second half due to lightning. When play resumed, Gonzalo Perez (Madrid, Spain) scored his first career goal on a corner kick, with Ferrer assisting. It was appropriate that the sophomore defender scored after playing outstanding defense all afternoon.

Ashland avoided the shutout with a goal by Oliver Whaley at 87:24. The Eagles held a 12-9 advantage in shots, but sophomore Samuel Alarcan was equal to the task in goal. He registered three saves.
