Blake, Arslan help Gannon to a four-set road win over Seton Hill

Madde Blake just misses two career highs while setter Bengisu Arslan returns to starting lineup

GREENSBURG, Pa.Madde Blake's (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) most productive offensive performance of the season and Bengisu Arslan's (Ankara, Turkey/Private Çankaya Doga Anatolian) return to the lineup sparked the Gannon women's volleyball team to a four-set win at Seton Hill on Friday night.

Blake, a senior outside hitter, finished with a team-leading 19 kills, just one short of her career high, as she helped Gannon claim a 25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18 victory over the Griffins at the Katherine Mabis McKenna Center.

Arslan, a sophomore setter, had missed several matches with an injury, but she returned to the starting lineup and recorded team highs of 41 assists and 12 digs.

Gannon coach Matt Darling was pleased with the outcome but is still looking for more consistent play.

"We're happy to get a win in a match where we once again struggled to get things going," he said. "Now we move on to another tough match on the road. Hopefully, we'll keep getting better."

Final score:
Gannon def. Seton Hill 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18)

Records:
Gannon 10-3 overall, 2-1 PSAC West
Seton Hill 6-9 overall, 0-3 PSAC West

What happened:
  • Gannon cruised to wins in the first two sets before Seton Hill rallied to win the third set and make things interesting. The Golden Knights then pulled away to clinch the win in the fourth set.
  • Arslan was solid in her return to the starting lineup. Marta Roicka (Warsaw, Poland/North Central Texas Academy) had started the previous seven matches while helping GU to a 6-1 record over that span.
  • Gannon is now 22-6 against Seton Hill in the all-time series.

By the numbers:
  • Blake finished with 19 kills. Her career high was 20 against IUP on Oct. 8, 2022. She also accounted for 21.5 points on Friday, just 0.5 shy of her career high of 22 points, which she compiled in the same match against IUP.
  • Blake had a strong hitting percentage of .391 with just one attack error.
  • Junior outside hitter Journey Blevins (Richwood, Ohio/North Union), who had led Gannon in kills in the first 12 matches, finished with 16 kills. She also had 11 digs.
  • Hailey Koch (Littleton, Col./Dakota Ridge) notched 12 kills, while Ali Sorenson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way East) had nine kills with a whopping .643 hitting percentage.
  • Seton Hill was led by its strong hitting duo of Catie Flohr (19 kills) and Paige Cole (18 kills). Flohr was particularly good with a .552 hitting percentage.
