Gannon completes volleyball sweep of two PSAC East teams with win over Bloomsburg

Junior Journey Blevins gets 17 kills as the Golden Knights win at home on Saturday morning

ERIE, Pa. – Well, that was worth the wait.

After the Gannon women's volleyball team opened the season with eight consecutive road matches, the Golden Knights returned to Erie to open their home schedule this weekend. The result was two lopsided victories during which Gannon swept six sets from two PSAC East teams.

On Saturday morning, the Knights beat Bloomsburg 25-16, 25-18, 25-10 in a little over one hour at the Highmark Events Center. On Friday night, they swept Kutztown 25-15, 25-10, 25-14 in their home opener.

Gannon improved to 8-2 on the season with their seventh consecutive victory.

"Our offensive efficiency was much better today than it was yesterday. I thought our blocking was better yesterday than it was today," Gannon coach Matt Darling said after the Bloomsburg match. "I think at different times we're checking all of the boxes for me, and as long as that continues to be the case and we get good effort from people, I think we'll continue to build. We're not quite where we want to be, but we're taking steps in the right direction."

What happened:
  • Gannon fans got their first extended look at junior outside hitter Journey Blevins (Richwood, Ohio/North Union). The transfer from Findlay has led the Golden Knights in kills in every match this season, but she played only a little over one set Friday night against Kutztown as many new players saw action. On Saturday, she was in top form, leading all players with 17 kills while compiling a .455 hitting percentage.
  • Redshirt junior Marta Roicka (Warsaw, Poland/North Central Texas Academy) made her fifth consecutive start at setter and directed the offense well with 35 assists. She also had three aces.
  • Bloomsburg, which dropped to 2-7, was coming off a 3-0 sweep of Edinboro on Friday night.

By the numbers:
  • Gannon hit .398 as a team to Bloomsburg's .149 hitting percentage.
  • Senior outside hitter Madde Blake (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) had nine kills for Gannon with a .409 hitting percentage.
  • Ali Sorenson (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln Way East) and Hailey Koch (Littleton, Col./Dakota Ridge) each added six kills. Blake had only 10 attacks and hits .500.
  • Junior libero Emma Hall (Lowell, Mich./Lowell) led Gannon with 12 digs, while Blevins had 10.

Up next:
Gannon will go back on the road to face Slippery Rock on Tuesday before hosting Clarion on Sept. 23, Homecoming Day.
