Gannon Drops Pair of Contests in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Gannon softball team will look to snap a seven-game losing streak on Friday as their spring trip to Florida winds down. The Golden Knights play a pair of games on Friday after dropping a pair on Thursday. Assumption pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh to post a 5-1 win in the opening game, and Dominican (NY) won by a 9-1 score in five innings in the nightcap.

The Golden Knights (1-8) open up Friday's action with a 9:00 a.m. contest vs. Concordia St. Paul before playing Sioux Falls at 2:00 p.m. A spring trip that was loaded with outstanding opponents concludes on Saturday as Gannon plays Ashland at 9:00 a.m. before heading back north.

Game 1 – Assumption 5, Gannon 1
The Golden Knights received solid pitching from Josie Spano (Hudson, Ohio/Western Reserve Academy) and Maggie Lenda (East Aurora, N.Y./Iroquois) but were done in by three errors. Assumption pushed across two runs in the top of the first with just one hit, and that a leadoff single. The Greyhounds were held scoreless until the top of the seventh when they pushed across three runs. Gannon had just closed the gap to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning as pinch runner Angela Vicini (Perry, Ohio/Perry) scored on a passed ball. She was running for Natalie Mallozzi, who opened the inning with a double. Spano, a freshman, started for Gannon and allowed just one hit in 4.1 innings before exiting following a pair of walks. She struck out four. Lenda relieved and got out of a bases loaded jam with a pair of strikeouts. Both teams finished with four hits, with Mallozzi going 2-for-4. Ashley Fox (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) and Lauryn Rougeux (Erie, Pa./McDowell) had the other safeties for Gannon.

Game 2 – Dominican (NY) 9, Gannon 1 (5 inn.)
The Chargers were able to jump out to a quick lead with two runs in the bottom of the first, then pushed across five more runs in the bottom of the second. Gannon got on the board in the third inning when Andrea Watson (Venus, Pa./Cranberry Area) hit a one-out triple and scored on Ashley Fox' (Cowansville, Pa./Karns City) squeeze bunt. Dominican answered with a run in the bottom of the frame and ended the game with the eight-run rule with a run in the bottom of the fifth. The Golden Knights finished with three hits. In addition to Watson's triple, Zoey Monica (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) and Jules Ryan (Collegeville, Pa./Spring Ford) had singles.
