Mims Drops in 20 Points in Loss at California (Pa.)

CALIFORNIA, Pa.Demetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) scored in double figures for the 15th consecutive game as Gannon dropped a 78-54 decision at California (Pa.) on Wednesday night at Cal's Convocation Center. The Golden Knights, playing for the third time in the last five days, are now 2-20 and 2-16 in the PSAC West with four games remaining. Cal remained in the PSAC West playoff chase, evening its record at 12-12 overall and 9-9 in league play.

Cal used a big run in the first half to take control of the game. Trailing 21-12, a Zach Kent (Magnolia, Del./Blair Academy (N.J.)) layup and Robertas Jonaitis' (Pakruojis, Lithuania/Greater Beckley Christian School) 3-pointer from the corner pulled Gannon within 21-17 with 9:19 left in the first half. But the Vulcans proceeded to run off the next 15 points to take a 36-17 lead with 4:08 left. Mims broke a stretch of almost six minutes without a point with a dunk. Cal led 41-29 at the half.

Gannon shot 43.4 percent (23-of-54) for the game while holding Cal to 35.3 percent (24-of-68). However, the Vulcans made 11-of-32 3-pointers with five players knocking down a three, while Gannon had three 3-pointers in 10 attempts. In addition, the physical game saw the Vulcans make 19-of-24 from the charity stripe while Gannon was just 5-for-5. The Golden Knights never reached the bonus.

The Golden Knights held a narrow 38-37 advantage in rebounds but were hurt by 23 turnovers while the Vulcans committed just eight turnovers. That led to a 21-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Mims was the lone Golden Knight in double digits as the 6'6" redshirt junior totaled 20 points, his fourth game with 20-or-more in the last eight games. He made 9-of-17 field goals and both of his free throws, adding a game-high nine rebounds. Four Gannon players finished with six points and redshirt freshman Thomas Whitley (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) had eight rebounds.

Four Vulcans reached double figures led by Cam Polak with 22 points, making 4-of-8 3-pointers. Keith Palek III added 12 points and seven rebounds, with Kadyn Hannah contributing 11 points and Donald Whitehead Jr. 10.

Gannon now gets a breather after playing eight games in the last 19 days. The Golden Knights return to action on Wednesday, February 15 hosting Clarion. Tipoff at the Highmark Events Center is 7:30 p.m.
