INDIANA, Pa. – During the Gannon women's basketball team's surge into first place in the PSAC West, hot shooting has been a recurring theme.
Sam Pirosko and
Emma Wright (Fairview, Pa./Talawanda) made sure that continued Saturday afternoon.
Led by that senior duo, Gannon shot 60 percent from the field and 88.2 percent from the free-throw line as the Golden Knights rolled to a 77-61 victory over Indiana in a PSAC West matchup at IUP's Kovalchick Convention & Athletic Complex.
As a result, Gannon improved to 21-3 overall and maintained its two-game lead in the PSAC West standings with a 13-3 record.
Pirosko scored a game-high 24 points and Wright added 20, and each reached those totals with remarkable shooting efficiency.
Pirosko sank 7-of-11 field-goal attempts, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and connected on 7-of-8 free-throw attempts.
Wright was simply perfect on the day. She made all seven of her field-goal attempts, including both of her 3-point shots. Wright also made all four of her free-throw tries.
Coach
Cleve Wright's team finished the game shooting 27-of-45 from the field for an even 60 percent. It marks the third consecutive game that the Knights have shot 50 percent or better. They have won all three games.
It's also the second time that Gannon has shot over 60 percent from the field against IUP (14-7, 9-7). GU shot 62.7 percent (32-of-51) during its 94-88 win over the Crimson Hawks on Jan. 11.
Gannon leads all 18 teams in the PSAC in field-goal shooting at 45.5 percent, while they also lead the PSAC in shooting defense, limiting opponents to 35.7 percent
The Golden Knights also finished Saturday's game shooting 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from 3-point range, and 15-of-17 (88.2 percent) from the free-throw line.
Gannon senior point guard
Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) made 2-of-3 attempts from 3-point territory and finished with 10 points.
Meanwhile, Pirosko moved up the Gannon career scoring list again. After opening the season in 31st place, the 5-foot-10 forward has steadily climbed the list. On Saturday, she moved into 13th place by moving her total to 1,300 points. She passed former Gannon standout Chelsea Rourke, who had 1,286 points.
In addition to efficient shooting, Gannon was also careful with the basketball. The Knights had just 12 turnovers in the game while forcing 16 IUP turnovers.
