Mims Scores Season-High 28 Points in Loss at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. Demetrius Mims (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) continued his strong play with 28 points, one shy of his career high, but host Seton Hill pulled away over the final ten minutes to avoid an upset on Saturday, handing Gannon a 72-57 defeat. The Golden Knights are 3-22 and 3-17 in the PSAC West while playoff-bound Seton Hill improved to 16-11 and 11-10, respectively.

Mims, a 6'6" redshirt junior, made 10-of-19 field goals and 8-of-10 free throws while playing all 40 minutes. He added six rebounds. Mims has now scored in double figures in 17 straight games.

Zach Kent (Magnolia, Del./Blair Academy (N.J.)) and Josh Omojafo (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean de Brebeuf) joined Mims in double figures with 11 points apiece. Kent, a 6'10" redshirt senior, recorded his first double-double of the year, finishing with a game-high 13 rebounds. That's a career high including two seasons at Division I Delaware State.  Omojafo, a freshman guard, was 5-of-10 from the floor and had six boards. Unfortunately the trio accounted for 50 of Gannon's 57 points.

Seton Hill featured three players in double figures, two coming off the bench but are usually starters. Sean Dillon scored 17 points with Samuel Tabe adding 14 and Ryan Meis 13.

After enjoying some solid shooting days of late Gannon finished at 36.4 percent (20-of-55), making just one 3-pointer in 12 tries. The Golden Knights held Seton Hill to 34.4 percent (21-of-61) but the Griffins made 7 3-pointers, albeit in 31 attempts. Gannon was 16-of-19 from the line and Seton Hill a near-perfect 23-of-24. The Griffins held a slight 39-37 edge on the glass and committed 12 turnovers compared to 17 for Gannon. That led to an 18-8 advantage in points off turnovers.

Gannon never led in the game after Seton Hill jumped out to a 9-2 lead. Omojafo's layup with just over two minutes left in the first half capped a 9-0 run as Gannon pulled even at 25-25. The Griffins scored the final five points of the half to take a 30-25 lead into intermission.

The Golden Knights remained within striking distance throughout the first ten minutes of the second half and trailed just 45-41 following a Kent layup. Seton Hill finally pulled away after that, scoring the next seven points for a 52-41 lead. Gannon would not pull closer than seven points the rest of the way, as Seton Hill made 14 straight free throws over the final two-and-a-half minutes. The Griffins were 21-of-22 at the line in the second half.

Gannon wraps up the 2022-23 season this week against a pair of local rivals. The Golden Knights made the short journey down I-79 to face Edinboro on Wednesday, February 22 before hosting Mercyhurst for Senior Day on Saturday, February 25.
