Hess Goes Deep as Golden Knights Open at Shippensburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team opened the 2023 campaign on Saturday with a pair of games at PSAC East foe Shippensburg. They faced a Raiders team that had already played six games and the results showed as the Golden Knights dropped the opener by a 10-2 score and the nightcap 4-1. The Raiders are now 6-2.

The twinbill featured two of the top teams in the PSAC with Gannon picked to finish third in the Western Division and Shippensburg was fourth in the Eastern Division.

The biggest bright spot for the Golden Knights was a solo home run in game number one by Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan). Gannon's career home run leader hit his 30th career long ball. The golden Knights also received a solid outing by Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) and Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) in game two.

The two teams will meet for one single nine-inning game on Sunday beginning at 12 noon.

GAME 1: Shippensburg 10, Gannon 2
The Raiders got off to fast start with seven runs thanks to five hits and a pair of walks in the opening inning. Justin Lyler and Joe Barbera each had two run singles. Gannon answered with a run in the top of the second inning when Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) hit into a double play, scoring Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside). Shippensburg answered with runs in the bottom of the frame but Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) stepped to the plate in the third and hit a solo home run to left field. The first baseman is the career record-holder at Gannon with 30 career home runs. The Raiders added a run in the bottom of the fourth for a final score. Hess ended with a 2-for-3 showing. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy), Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area), Cam Vozel, Gagnon and Zeroski added singles as Gannon totaled seven hits. Jaret Boyer (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) started and took the loss. Freshman Logan Oakes (Kent, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) came in and threw the next three innings, allowing one earned run and striking out four, while Evan Harrison (Mississauga, Ontario/St. Aloysius Gonzaga S.S.) finished up with a pair of scoreless innings, striking out a pair.

GAME 2: Shippensburg 4, Gannon 1
Joe Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) turned in a strong showing on the mound but Gannon was held to just three hits in the nine-inning game. The raiders took a 1-0 lead after one inning, but Gannon knotted the score at 1-1 in the top of the third. Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) reached second on an error and moved to third on Branden Myers (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) groundout. He came in to score on Miguel Vega's (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) grounder to short. Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) led off the fourth with a double but was stranded at third. The Golden Knights went down in order the final three innings. Ship took a 2-1 lead on a two-out double in the fourth and pushed across two more runs in the fifth with two outs. Wetherholt finished with two hits in four at bats. Vega accounted for the other base hit and picked up his first stolen base after stealing 29 bases last year. Reitebach, Gannon's top relief pitcher a year ago, started and went the first five innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out two. Kevin Schott (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) hurled the last three innings allowing two hits and striking out one.
