Maibach Has First Career Double Double as Gannon is Edged by No. 23 Glenville State

Redshirt freshman finishes with 17 points and 10 rebounds

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's basketball came up just short of defeating a nationally-ranked team for the third straight game on Friday night. The Golden Knights dropped a 74-70 decision to No. 23 Glenville State on the opening night of the Atlantic Region Challenge at the Highmark Events Center.

The loss dropped Gannon, who was receiving votes in the WBCA Division II Top 25 and was 25th in the CSC Top 25, to 3-1. The Golden Knights had defeated No. 19 Angelo State and No. 5 Tampa in last week's D2CCA Tip-Off Tournament in Billings, Montana.

The Golden Knights nearly made a big comeback in the fourth quarter against a Glenville State team that was 33-3 last year and reached the Division II national semifinals. It was the season opener for the Pioneers.

The Pioneers led 55-48 after three quarters and extended the lead to nine points with the opening bucket of the quarter. Over the next five minutes the Golden Knights outscored Glenville State 12-2 to take a 60-59 lead with 5:03 remaining. McKel Nation's (Lebanon, Ohio/Springboro) 3-point play capped the rally as she scored on a layup and converted the ensuing free throw. Nation scored seven of her nine points during the run.

The lead exchanged hands three times, with Sam Pirosko's two free throws giving Gannon its final lead of the night at 62-61 with 4:25 left. Glenville State went up by three points but a pair of Trinitee Harris (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Central) free throws eventually knotted the game at 66-66 with 1:59 left.

Turnovers would do the Golden Knights in after that as the Pioneers ran off the seven points to take a 73-66 lead with 35 ticks on the clock. There were three turnovers in that period.

Gannon would make one last run. Kate Ratliff (Canal Winchester, Ohio/Canal Winchester) made a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining, and the freshman followed with a steal that led to a layup by Harris. The score was 73-70 with just over ten second left, but the Pioneers made one-of-two free throws and Gannon missed a long three to end the game.

Redshirt freshman Andrea Maibach (Creston, Ohio/Norwayne) led Gannon with her first career double-double, scoring a game-high 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Pirosko also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 boards. The redshirt senior now has 37 straight games in double figures and 18 career double doubles. She moved into fifth place in career scoring with 1,613 points.

Harris was also in double figures with 11 points. Ratliff turned in a strong showing off the bench with eight points, five rebounds and three steals.

Gannon ended the night shooting 41.1 percent from the floor (23-of-56), making 2-of-10 3-pointers, and 71.0 percent from the line (22-of-31). Glenville State was similar at 42.2 (27-of-64), going 7-of-26 on 3-pointers, but was just 13-of-32 at the line.

Gannon held a 46-36 advantage on the glass. The Golden Knights were guilty of 31 turnovers that resulted in 27 points against a frenetic Glenville State full court press. Gannon forced the Pioneers into 25 turnovers, good for 23 points.

The Golden Knights return to the court on Saturday hosting Notre Dame (Ohio) at 5:30 p.m. The Falcons handed Clarion a 93-83 defeat in Friday's opening game. Clarion and Glenville State square off at 3:00 p.m.
