ERIE, PA. – Balance was the key in the Gannon University women's basketball team's latest victory.
Six players scored in double figures as Coach
Cleve Wright's team downed Millersville 86-57 in a PSAC crossover game on Wednesday night at Highmark Events Center.
The Golden Knights had another strong first quarter and rolled to their 10th consecutive victory as they moved their overall record to 16-2. Gannon remained alone in first place in the PSAC West with an 8-2 mark.
Sam Pirosko led GU again, scoring 18 points while moving up two spots on Gannon's career scoring list. The 5-foot-10 senior forward now ranks 16th in Gannon history with 1,194 points as she moved past Ashley Lowdermilk (1,183 points) and Kelly Moyer (1,186) on Wednesday.
Senior guard
Emma Wright (Fairview, Pa./Talawanda) had another strong all-around game for Gannon with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.
While Pirosko (19.2 ppg) and Wright (13.3 ppg) have led the Knights in scoring all season, the team once again showed that it can get offense from many players. On this night, Gannon received 10 points apiece from seniors
Delaney Dogan (West Middlesex, Pa./West Middlesex) and
Ali Benim (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek), junior
Maddy Wheatley (Canberra, Australia/UCSSC Lake Ginninderra), and freshman
Bri Claxon (South Webster, Ohio/South Webster).
Gannon's shooting continued to sizzle as the Knights shot 61 percent (36-of-59) from the field, including 58.8 percent (10-of-17) from 3-point range. Pirosko, Wheatley, and senior guard
Boston McKinney (Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) each went 2-for-2 from 3-point territory while Benim went 2-for-3. Those four players combined to hit 8-of-9 shots from long range.
The Golden Knights pulled away in the first quarter by rolling to a 19-2 lead in the first 7 minutes and taking a 27-6 lead into the second quarter. Millersville never pulled closer than 16 points the rest of the way as Gannon built a lead as big as 31 points.
Gannon's defense again fed the offense as the Knights limited the Marauders to 40.8 percent shooting and forced 24 Millersville turnovers.
The Golden Knights' winning streak has included eight consecutive wins in the PSAC after they lost their first two conference games on the road in early December. Gannon has won by an average of 21.6 points per game during the 10 games.
Millersville (9-7 overall, 4-6 PSAC East) was led by Marin Miller's 16 points.
Gannon will travel across Erie on Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. matchup against rival Mercyhurst (11-6, 6-4).
