Judy Sets Career Record for Wins, Sapp Improves to 9-0 as Gannon Wins Twice at UPJ

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team rode a record-setting performance by Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) in game number one and a gutsy showing by Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) in the second game to sweep Pitt-Johnstown as the regular season wraps up this weekend. Gannon edged the Mountain Cats 2-1 in the opener, then scored solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings in the nightcap for a 5-3 victory.

The Golden Knights have now won six straight games to move to 28-13 overall and 19-7 in the PSAC West. The Golden Knights have moved within a win over UPJ or a Slippery Rock loss to Mercyhurst to clinching their second PSAC West regular season title in the last three years. SRU, second in the division with a 15-9 record, and Mercyhurst meet for two games on Friday and two more on Saturday.

Gannon and UPJ were also originally scheduled to play on Friday and Saturday, but the schedule was adjusted with inclement weather forecast for both days. The two will now play a pair of games on Sunday, once again at Johnstown's Point Stadium. McConnell Family Stadium is unavailable with the artificial surface being replaced.

As has been the case this season, Gannon received great efforts from Judy and Sapp. Improved to 6-1 while scattering six hits. More importantly, the right-hander won his 21st career game to break the career record of 20 held by Josh Leslie.  Sapp battled control issues early but made it through six innings as the left-hander is now 9-0, one win shy of the season record held by Josh Peterson.

GAME 1 – Gannon 2, UPJ 1
Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) threw a complete game six-hitter and pitched out of a seventh inning jam to improve to 6-1. The win was the 21st of his career, breaking the career record for wins previously held by Josh Leslie. Judy previously set career records for innings pitched and strikeouts. Gannon scored a run in the top of the first inning as Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) led off the game with a double to right center, moved to third on Ian Hess' (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) fly ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area). UPJ answered with a run in the bottom of the inning in a double and a triple with one out. He stranded the runner at third thanks to a strikeout and ground out. Gannon broke the tie in the top of the fourth when Wetherholt doubled down the right field line moved to third on Ryan Kalbfus' (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) groundout and came home on a groundout to second by Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose). Judy, meanwhile, overcame several other challenges. In the bottom of the third he stranded runners on first and second with two outs with a flyout. In the fifth the Mountain Cats had a runner reach third with two outs before Judy induced an inning-ending groundout. Finally, the first two batters reached on singles to open the seventh inning. A ground out, strikeout and ground out ended the game. Judy ended the game with two walks and seven strikeouts. Gannon was limited to four hits. , with Kalbfus and Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) going 1-for-3 to join Vozel and Wetherholt with hits.

GAME 2 – Gannon 5, UPJ 3
The Golden Knights broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the sixth and added another in the seventh. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) doubled with one out and scored the game-winning run on a single by Jared Bielanin (Erie, Pa./McDowell). Beilanin would steal second and third but was stranded there. Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) gave the Golden Knights a two-run lead with a home run to left center, his first home run of the season. Gannon took a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Brandon Wetherholt's (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) first of two doubles drove in Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who had walked. He came around to score on a throwing error on the play. Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) singled up the middle, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a Bielanin double. UPJ knotted the score at 3-3 with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning as Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) was battling with his command. The graduate student settled down to give the Golden Knights six innings, surviving a threat in the bottom of the sixth. Following a one-out double, he ended the frame with a strikeout and ground out. Sapp allowed six hits in six innings, walking two and striking out seven. He improved to 9-0 which is tied for second in wins in a season. In addition, he boosted his season strikeout total to 87, which ranks third in a season. Joseph Reitebach (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) relieved in the seventh inning. He retired the first two batters, hit a batter, and then ended the game with a fly out to right for his fourth save. Bielanin was 2-for-3 with a pair of stolen bases and two RBIs, while Wetherholt was 2-for-4 with two doubles.
