Woodworth Scores Four Times to Secure Team Lead in Scoring in Season-Ending Contest at Mercyhurst

ERIE, Pa.McKenna Woodworth (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) accounted for four goals and an assist but Mercyhurst parlayed a dominant first-half effort to hand Gannon a 13-9 loss on Saturday afternoon at Saxon Field on the Mercyhurst campus. The Golden Knights wrapped up the season with a 5-12 record, finishing 3-9 in the PSAC West. Mercyhurst moves on to the PSAC Tournament and is 13-4 overall and 9-3 in conference action.

Mercyhurst ended the match with a 34-18 advantage in shots, but the number was particularly telling over the first 30 minutes when the Lakers took 20 shots while holding Gannon to four. Mercyhurst would lead 7-2 as goalie Cheyenne Jess (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) kept Gannon in the contest with seven saves.

The Lakers opened with a goal just 21 seconds into the game. Gannon answered less than a minute later as freshman Caroline Stevens (Syracuse, N.Y./Liverpool) scored her 41st goal. The two exchanged goals once again, with Macy Hepditch's (Waterloo, Ontario/Resurrection Catholic) goal, assisted by Woodworth, with a man up knotted the score at 2-2.

Hepditch's goal came at 9:54 of the first period. The Golden Knights would not again until the 4:45 mark of the third quarter. By that time Mercyhurst had scored eight straight goals before Gannon scored three goals in a row to make it 10-5. Woodworth scored the first and third goals, the latter to open the fourth quarter, with Rachel Tufts (Erie, Pa./McDowell) accounting for the middle goal.

A young Gannon squad continued to battle and would outscore the Lakers 5-3 over the final 15 minutes. Woodworth ended the quarter with three goals in all while Alli Jacobs (Eden, N.Y./Eden) added the other two.

In addition to Woodworth's four goals, Jacobs had two, with Stevens, Tufts, and Hepditch scoring one apiece. Tufts added an assist. Woodworth, a sophomore, ended the year leading Gannon in points for the second straight year with 51, on 40 goals and 11 assists. Stevens finished with a team-high 41 goals. Jess finished with 11 saves.

Draw controls were nearly even with Mercyhurst gaining 13 and Gannon 11, and the Golden Knights finished with 18 turnovers to 16 for the Lakers. Gannon was successful on 9 of 17 clears while Mercyhurst was 16 of 21.

Gannon's five wins eclipsed last year's total of one and are the most since the 2017 team also won five games.
