Judy, Sapp Shut Down Clarion as Gannon Sweeps Golden Eagles

BUTLER, Pa. – The Gannon baseball team swept a doubleheader on Friday vs. Clarion as the righty-lefty combo of Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) and Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) limited the Golden Eagles to just six hits combined. Both hurlers tossed three-hitters as Gannon captured game one by a 10-0 score, then won game two by a 6-1 margin. Clarion was the host team with the PSAC West doubleheader moved from Clarion to Butler's Pullman Park.

With the two victories, Gannon improved to 18-10 under first-year head coach DJ Cannon, along with 9-5 in the PSAC West. Clarion dropped to 9-22 and 4-10, respectively. The two teams will play the second of their back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday at McConnell Family Stadium. The first pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
In the first game, Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) allowed just three hits in a highly-efficient outing to set school records for career shutouts and career innings pitched. The redshirt senior needed just 86 pitches, 60 of which were strikes, to register his sixth career shutout, a new school record. In addition, he set the school record for career innings pitched with 232. He previously held the record for career strikeouts, as he struck out 12 to boost his career total to 289. The right hander now has 19 career wins, one shy of Josh Leslie's career record of 20.

While Judy was continuing his assault on the pitching records, Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) is now showing up in the hitting records. The redshirt junior first baseman drove in three runs in the first game to move into a tie for ninth place in career RBIs with 87. He is also second in career home runs with 24.

GAME 1 – Gannon 11, Clarion 0
Deven Judy (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon Area) hurled a three-hitter while further etching his name in the Gannon records books and the Golden Knights put together a pair of big innings to coast to the win. Judy walked two and struck out 12, his second game in double figures this season. He allowed just one runner to reach second base, that coming in the third inning. While Judy was shutting down the Clarion bats, Gannon scored five runs in the second inning and then added six more runs in the top of the fifth. All told, Gannon pounded out 13 hits, with five players having two hits apiece. Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and had a double. Cameron Vozel (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and Connor Rakow (Franklin, Pa./Franklin) added two hits and an RBI apiece, with Rakow and Kalbfus contributing doubles. Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose) was also 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs. Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy) had a hit and an RBI and stole a pair of bases. Gannon bunched together five hits in the top of the second inning, with all five runs scoring with two outs. Vega drove in the first run with a single, and Hess followed with a two-run single. Kalbfus' single to left plated the fourth run and the fifth run scored on an outfield error. Gannon sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the six, pounding out six hits. Luke Callahan (Chardon, Ohio/Chardon) plated the first run with a single, and Rakow's two-run double later made it 10-0. Hess would push across the final run with an RBI single.

GAME 2 – Gannon 6, Clarion 1
Eric Sapp (Deerfield, Ohio/Southeast) improved to a perfect 6-0 with Gannon's second three-hitter of the day. The left hander walked just two batters, both in the sixth inning when he allowed Clarion's only run, while striking out 10. It was his third straight game with 10-or-more strikeouts. He has allowed one run or less in four of his seven starts. The Golden Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Miguel Vega (Florida, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy). The Gannon second baseman led off the game with a double, and after an out stole third base and scored on an error by the third baseman. Gannon pushed across four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead. Two of the runs scored on sacrifice flies by Brandon Wetherholt (Gibsonia, Pa./Mars Area) and Ryan Kalbfus (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). Kieran Gagnon (Mono, Ontario/Westside) plated Ian Hess (Canonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan), who was hit by a pitch, with a single, and a wild pitch scored Jorge Mejia (San Juan, Puerto Rico/Colegio San Jose), who had singled earlier singled. The lead grew to 6-0 in the fourth as Trey Zeroski (Clinton, Pa./West Allegheny) hit a leadoff single through the left side, stole second, moved to third on a balk, and scored on a Vega sacrifice fly. Eight different players had a hit for the Golden Knights, and Gannon stole six bases, including two by Vega. Vega scored a pair of runs.
